Bombacopsis is a genus in the family Malvaceae native to Central America and northern South America.

Distribution

Its common range is in the tropical forests of western Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama in Central America; and of Colombia and Venezuela in South America.

Description

Bombacopsis species are medium-sized to large trees, that can reach 3–6 feet (0.91–1.83 m) in diameter, and at times reaches a height of 100 feet (30 m). The trunk and larger branches often have sharp prickles.

A former Bombacopsis species was Bombacopsis quinata. It has been reclassified as Pachira quinata, also in the family Malvaceae.
