Tabatabaei (Arabic: طباطبائي, Ṭabāṭabāʾī; Persian: طباطبایی, Ṭabâṭabâyī) (also spelled Tabatabai, Tabatabaee, Tabatabaie, Tabatabaeyan) is a surname of Iranian/Persian origin. It is one of many families from the descendants of Hasan ibn Ali, grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the second imam of Shia Muslims, primarily predominant in Iran, but also in Iraq, Lebanon and Kuwait.
