Andul Dutta Chaudhury Family
Andul Dutta Chaudhury (Bengali :আন্দুল দত্তচৌধুরী) family was a Zamindar (superior landlords) of the Andul (earlier known as Chandul) area, during Muslim rule in India.[1] The family is also known as 'Chaudhury of Andul'. It is an off-shoot of Duttas of Bally.
Present descendants are scattered throughout India, Bangladesh and also in United States.
History
The origin is traced back in the 10th Century CE, when King Adisura brought five Brahmins and five Kayasthas to Bengal. Purushottam Dutta of Maharshi Bharadwaja clan was one of the Kayasthas and is regarded as the first in the genealogy of the Andul Dutta Chaudhury family.[2]
Tekari Dutta, a lineal descendant of Purushottam moved from Bally and settled at Andul in and around 1390 CE, after bestowing the title 'Chaudhury', from then Delhi Sultanate and became the first zamindar of Andul.[3]
Durga Puja festival
Zamindar Ramsharan Dutta Chaudhury is said to have initiated family's Durga puja festival in 1550 circa by following Tantra rituals in an atchala. But after getting some interruption, Durga puja stopped for some years till it was restarted by his sixth son, Kashiwar in 1609 CE in their ancestral home at Andul.[4] Today as many as four Durga Pujas are held by different lineages of the family- namely, Andul Chaudhuri Barir puja, Modon Mohan Dutta Barir puja, Hatkhola Dutta Barir puja and Shymal Dhon Dutta Bari-r pujo.[5]
