Ashlyns Hall

Ashlyns Hall is a large country house at Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. It is a Grade II* listed building.

History

The present hall was built around 1800[1] for James Smith, a member of the banking family that established Smith's Bank.[2] It was the birthplace of his son, Augustus Smith, Member of Parliament for Truro, before being acquired by William Longman, the publisher, in 1859.[2] A large part of the estate, to the North of the hall, was sold off to establish Ashlyns School in 1930.[2] The hall was then owned by the Cooper and Kingsley families before it was converted for use as offices in 1991.[3] Another section of the estate, this time to the West of the hall, was sold off to establish Ashlyns Care Home in around 2000.[4] The hall itself is currently occupied by The Gap Partnership.[5]
