The Avon Grove School District (AGSD) is a publicly funded, K-12 school district located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. serving over 5,000 students in four schools: Penn London Elementary School (K-2), Avon Grove Intermediate School (3-6), Fred S. Engle Middle School (7-8) and Avon Grove High School (9-12).[1]

Geography

The District is located in a rural-suburban setting 34 miles southwest of Philadelphia, PA, and 18 miles northwest of Wilmington, DE. Avon Grove covers 67 square miles and consists of five townships:

Avondale and West Grove are two boroughs within London Grove Township. Due to the closeness of the two boroughs (less than three miles in distance from each other), it was natural that the area became known as Avon Grove.[3]

Strategic Initiatives

Full-Day Kindergarten

The District began offering full-day kindergarten in the 2017-18 school year. The inaugural-year enrollment of 298 students exceeded the District's 286-student projection. The previously implemented half-day kindergarten program had become an antiquated model that gave the District's youngest learners less than three hours a day to master critical literacy and math foundational concepts, as well as to learn social and emotional skills necessary to be successful in a classroom setting. The move to a full-day program has allowed students additional time to learn more thoroughly and deeply instead of rushing through key concepts. [4]

Dual-Enrollment

Avon Grove High School offers students a dual-enrollment program. This program allows high school students to take college credit-earning courses while remaining enrolled at their high school. The courses count towards both high school graduation requirements and a college degree. Through this program, the students continue to have full access to all clubs, activities and programs at their high school, including the graduation ceremony.

In the 2016-17 school year, 94 Avon Grove students earned 213 passing grades in dual-enrollment programs, with an estimated college savings of $66,500.

1:1 Initiative

The District began implementing its 1:1 Technology Initiative in 2016-17, issuing a Chromebook to every seventh- and eighth-grade student at Fred S. Engle Middle School in the program's inaugural year. The Chromebooks are a gateway to Schoology, the District’s digital learning management system. Through Schoology, students can access curriculum and content, including text, video and other resources provided by their teachers. The Chromebooks allow students to access the same engaging materials whether at school or at home.

In the 2017-18 school year, all sixth-graders received a device. In 2018-19, all students from grades six through twelve will have a District-provided device.

Co-Curricular Activities

At Avon Grove School District, co-curricular opportunities begin in third grade, promoting academic achievement while enhancing teaching and learning. The District offers a large variety of clubs, activities and sports.

By Pennsylvania law, all K-12 students in the District, including those who attend a private non-public school, cyber charter school, charter school and those homeschooled, are eligible to participate in the extracurricular programs, including all athletics. They must meet the same eligibility rules as the students enrolled in the District's schools.[5]
