The Society was formed on November 15, 1923, at a meeting led by University of Chattanooga Professor Burleigh S. Annis at the Chattanooga YMCA. The society's name came from the recently deceased, distinguished Tennessee astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard.
The Society has public meetings at 7:30pm on the second Thursday of each month and conducts star parties throughout the year.
