Bloom Into You (Japanese: やがて君になる, Hepburn: Yagate Kimi ni Naru, lit. Eventually, I will become you)[3] is a Japanese yuri manga series written and illustrated by Nio Nakatani.[4] The manga began serialization in the Japanese monthly magazine Dengeki Daioh[5] on April 27, 2015,[6] and is published in Japan by ASCII Media Works under the Dengeki Comics NEXT label.[7] As of January 2018, five tankōbon volumes have been released.[3] The manga was licensed for English release in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment[2] on February 14, 2016, and its first volume was released in January 2017.[8] An anime television series adaptation by Troyca is set to premiere in October 2018.[9]

The story focuses on Yuu Koito, a first-year high school girl who is unable to experience feelings of love, and Touko Nanami, the second-year student council president who suddenly confesses to Yuu.

Plot

Yuu Koito has always loved shōjo manga, so she is aware of what she ought to be feeling if she were to receive a confession. But when a junior high classmate confesses his feelings for her, she does not feel anything. She delays her response, and ends up entering high school, still unsure how to respond. There, she happens to see the student council president, Touko Nanami, elegantly turn down a confession. Yuu is inspired to ask her for advice. She finds out that Nanami has never accepted a confession because none of them has ever made her feel anything in particular. The two bond over their similarities. But then Nanami realizes that she could fall in love with Yuu, and so she suddenly confesses her feelings to her.

Anime

An anime television series adaptation was announced in the June issue of the Dengeki Daioh magazine on April 27, 2018. The anime is directed by Makoto Katō and written by Jukki Hanada, featuring animation by Troyca and character designs by Hiroaki Gohda. The series will premiere in October 2018.[9]

Reception

Seven Seas production manager Lissa Pattillo praised its "adorable artwork and charming love story".[12]

Erica Friedman, the president of Yuricon and ALC Publishing, reviewed the manga, praising the realism of the characters. She added that unlike most other yuri series, this series featured prominent male characters, which was a refreshing change. She also noted that although yuri is not uncommon from Dengeki Comics, most of the time, such series are of the "highly service-y" type. And so she found it encouraging to have a "nice" yuri series such as Bloom Into You, rather than a "vaguely icky" one. However, she also found some aspects the series problematic. She said that the scenario is presented such that if Touko's feelings are "honest and sincere", then "of course Yuu will come around to falling for her". But in the real world, sincere feelings should not be a "kind of contract" that "must be returned by object of their affection". She posited, what if, for example, Yuu were asexual? Then she would never have those feelings for Touko. As a result, she stated her concern that Yuu's agency would be "stripped from her" as the narrative continues.[23] In reviews of later volumes, she expressed her continuing disapproval of Touko's "lack of consent and coercion" that she is using on Yuu.[24]

Bloom Into You placed 4th in the 2017 Next Manga Awards from Niconico and Da Vinci.[25][26] The manga has also ranked on Oricon's weekly manga rankings chart, with Volume 4 reaching 30th place and Volume 5 reaching 21st place.[27][28]On the March 24 2018, it was announced that the manga placed 3rd in AnimeJapan's "Manga Most Wanted as Anime by Fans" poll.[29]
