"Break My Heart" is a song by English singer Dua Lipa. It was released on 25 March 2020 through Warner Records as the third single from her second studio album Future Nostalgia (2020)[1][2] and will impact contemporary hit radio on 31 March as the second US single off the album.[3] The song was written by Lipa, Alexandra Tamposi and its producers the Monsters and the Strangerz. "Break My Heart" samples the melody from "Need You Tonight" (1987) by INXS, thus Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farriss are also credited as songwriters.[2]

Background

"Break My Heart" was leaked in January 2020 along with "Physical."[2] Lipa first revealed that the song would serve as the third single from Future Nostalgia in March 2020 on the Australian TV show Sunrise.[4] Lipa revealed the cover art and announced that the song would be released on 27 March 2020.[5][6] She later pushed up the release of the song to 25 March 2020 due to a potential and full leak of the album.[7]

Lipa said that she sees the song as a "celebration of vulnerability and being open about the vulnerable side of being in love, where I previously saw as weakness.[8]

Composition

Musically, "Break My Heart" is a three minute and fourty one second dance-pop[9] and disco-pop[10] song with a europop beat[11] in a "retro-futuristic" style.[10] It features bouncing-ball bass, handclaps[12], a staccato bass rhythm[13] and an "uplifting retro-inspired dance beat".[14] The song samples the melody from "Need You Tonight" by INXS.[15] Lyrically, the song is about being unable to resist the temptation of pursuing love.[16]

In terms of music notation, "Break My Heart" was composed using 4
4
common time
in the key of E minor, with a tempo of 113 beats per minute.[17] Lipa's vocal range spans from the low note E3 to the high note of B4, giving the song four notes of range.[17]

Music video

The song's accompanying music video premiered via YouTube premiere on 26 March 2020 and was directed by Henry Scholfield.[18][19] The video was shot in Sofia, Bulgaria in January 2020 over the course of five days.[20][21][22] The video features a set of "’90s-inspired slide clips."[23]

Synopsis

The video begins with Lipa jumping on cars and walking through a traffic-jammed city block.[24] She is then seen in a man's apartment where she struggles to maintain her balance.[25] This is a metaphor for being uncertain about whether her feelings are being reciprocated.[25] Lipa then finds herself in a restaurant where she observes various couples going through issues.[19] She starts to dance on a disco floor in the middle of the restaurant before a wall explodes and she is sucked out.[24][25] She lands on an airplane seat where she gets up and walks to the back before it breaks off.[19] The carpet used on the plane is that of The Shining (1980).[24] Lipa then begins to dance on the end of the plane before a life raft explodes on her and she wakes up in a bed with a confused partner.[19] She runs scared into the bathroom picking up her shoes and beds with other men begin cycling through in the background.[19] She then falls into the bathtub which turns into a frothy pink martini one of Lipa's backup dancers is holding while she dances on a bar couch.[25] The video concludes looking at all the previous scenes and undoing some of the transitions before Lipa blows a bubble sitting on a car from the first scene.[18]
