The by-election was caused by the death of incumbent MP Clarence Skinner of the Labour Party (and a likely future leader) on 26 April 1962.[1] The by-election was won by Bill Rowling, also of the Labour Party (and a future leader).[2] The Social Credit candidate P. H. Matthews was the leader of the party.
