@Le Deluge: I want to open this discussion to talk about the necessity of Category:2023 films and all other subcategories of it. I want to know why we keep these categories alive, since you feel that all 2023 films should, in your own words, at Shelby Oaks "disable year categories until it's released". This action will result in a speedy delete in all 2023 year categories. I would like to gather a thorough consensus on this matter, among multiple wiki editors. @Cardei012597:I'm sorry if it came across as a bit grumpy, but I was in the middle of a big attack on the Special:WantedCategories backlog which grows by up to 100 red-linked categories a day, despite WP:REDNOT making it clear that you shouldn't leave red links to categories, either create the category or delete the link. You'd left a red link when you created Category:2023 directorial debut films and while I'm not a purist about these things - if we were in December I would have just created it and moved on to the next SWC, whereas there are plenty who wouldn't consider it until we were into the year - it's way too early in the year to be creating 2023 categories.
For which I cite the policy WP:CRYSTAL - Wikipedia does not predict the future...Dates are not definite until the event actually takes place, as even otherwise-notable events can be cancelled or postponed at the last minute by a major incident. We've had a perfect example recently in the way that many "2020 films" (and other events/product releases) were pushed into 2021 or even 2022 by the pandemic. So you can't rely on that date until the release has actually happened, it's not a WP:DEFINING characteristic of the film until it's released. And we already have Category:Upcoming films which is a more accurate and reliable category for such films - and many articles are in both categories, so why duplicate? I just do not believe disabling only one 2023 film of its year categories is necessary, unless all 2023 films are included in the disabling process, therefore emptying all 2023 categories. My question is, why only Shelby Oaks? It's not special or one-of-a-kind compared to any other upcoming film, as far as I'm aware. I will support disabling the 2023 categories on Shelby Oaks, ONLY if all other 2023 films had their 2023 year categories disabled first. Its pointless to only focus on Shelby Oaks, when its situation is not more important than any other upcoming film. Cardei012597 (talk) 12:29, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Cardei012597: I'm not just "disabling only one film". I disable future year categories on any article - film, album, rollercoaster, whatever - that I come across as part of my work on the SWC backlog. But I'd rather spend my limited Wiki time doing more constructive things than monitoring the contents of Category:2023 films - as I say, I'm not that purist about it. But you should be aware that WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not an argument, and I've yet to hear you make a single positive argument for including the category, with reference to Wikipedia policy and past consensus other than WP:IDONTLIKEIT. Remember WP:Wikipedia is a work in progress, most articles are imperfect and not fully compliant with policy, but it makes sense to edit in that general direction even if we're not at that destination yet.Le Deluge (talk) 15:53, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think, at the time being, we can table this discussion until more editors contribute to this discussion. I highly suggest we wait for at least User:Bovineboy2008 to join this discussion, as he created this specific category and many of the 2023 year subcategories. I would like to hear his thoughts on this matter. Cardei012597 (talk) 16:00, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still waiting for your argument. But in any case, the way to get more eyeballs on this is to take it off a category page and discuss it at WikiProject level, it goes beyond just films so I've started a thread at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Years#Year_categories_for_upcoming_products. According to User:Liz, any 2023 year category that is empty (disabled categories) for seven days, it will be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion. This was just detailed to me in my talk page. Cardei012597 (talk) 11:36, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is just policy for CSD C1 taggings, for empty categories. There are times, like for the category you were concerned about, where the category is only temporarily empty or sometimes categories are emptied "out of process", that is, they are emptied to get them deleted instead of proposing a deletion of a category at WP:CFD. Those reasons are why empty categories sit for 7 days before they are deleted. It is not uncommon if, during that week, a category is no longer empty and so the CSD tag is removed. But, Cardei012597, please do not ever remove a speedy deletion tag from a page you have created. There are several editors and admins who watch Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion during the day and night and remove categories once they are no longer empty. Liz Read!
