Should this category be retained (and indeed all other categories that refer simply as "Ireland")?
Ireland relates to the island. The Republic of Ireland relates to the country. Northern Ireland is not a country, yet forms part of the union of the United Kingdom (of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales). Yet sometimes, across Wikipedia, the term Ireland is used interchangeably with the Republic of Ireland, creating ambiguity. For example, this category, as it stands now, contains categories of RC primary schools in the Republic of Ireland and RC primary schools in Northern Ireland. Further, this category is classified as Category:Catholic elementary and primary schools by country. Clearly, Northern Ireland is not a country, and hence that category should not be used. Also, this category is classified as Category:Catholic elementary and primary schools in Europe. While on the face of things, that would appear okay, RC primary schools that are located in Northern Ireland are categorised twice: in this category and again in the category for RC primary schools in the United Kingdom. This is also not ideal. The island of Ireland is not a continent. I can see no specific reason to list schools located in Northern Ireland anywhere else but in a category that relates to schools in the United Kingdom. And schools that relate to the Republic of Ireland should be listed under the category for the Republic of Ireland (and not Ireland). Accordingly, I applied a category redirect at this edit. @Laurel Lodged: reverted this edit without explanation. I will restore my earlier edit. Please discuss here before reverting any further edits. Rangasyd (talk) 11:46, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
"Yet sometimes, across Wikipedia..." — No. Always across Wiki. Or at least it should be. Have a look at WP:IMOS and the wikiproject:ireland above. In summary the convention is that every category with Northern Ireland should have a double parentage: Ireland and the Unitied Kingdom. Similarly every Republic of Ireland category should also have an equivalent Ireland category as its parent. @Rangasyd:Laurel Lodged (talk) 14:00, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. It appears that you've picked up the red pen, before discussing here – such is your approach. Instead of WP:IMOS and the wikiproject:ireland, links to the discussions here and here would have been handy. However, I cannot see that the outcomes of the poll substantiate your point. There was no discussion about categories in that discussion/poll. Given all the above, and in my desire to ensure that this does not get into an edit war, I have created a broader discussion about categories in the island of Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the division/territory/region of Northern Ireland. That discussion is located here. Feel free to add objective commentary, as you wish. Bíodh lá deas agaibh, lá maith anois agaibh! Rangasyd (talk) 03:06, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
