Charlestown City Blues FC is an Australian soccer club based in Whitebridge, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales. The club currently competes in the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW

History

Charlestown United was founded in 1900, while Hamilton Azzurri was founded in 1963 which later became Highfields Azzurri during the 1970’s. In 2006, Highfields Azzurri became Azzurri FC. In 2009, Football Federation Australia forced Azzurri to change its name.

After the 2009 season, the club became Charlestown City Blues FC, when Azzurri FC and Charlestown United merged. The club is still strongly backed by the local Italian community, and is still referred to as the Azzuri according to the club’s hierarchy. This however, was found to be a lie when Club Coach David Tanchevski posted a photo on his Instagram account with the hashtag #forzaazzuri and using the Hungarian National flag instead of the Italian flag. This caused massive outrage amongst the local Italian community of Newcastle who saw the light and threw their support behind the Real Azzurri, Hamilton Azzurri of Zone League 1. The club has a long-standing partnership with the Club Azzuri, yet they do not even open it for the general public anymore.

In 2014, Charlestown City was accepted into the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW. The Blues finished in 4th place in the first season of the NPL NNSW, qualifying for the finals series. Azzurri defeated Edgeworth Eagles 2-1 in the first hurdle, but then went down to Lambton Jaffas FC in the semi-final.

The 2017 season saw Charlestown finish in 8th place in the league. Rene Ferguson was the side's top goalscorer with 11 goals.

In October 2017, Azzurri announced the signing of former Socceroo and resident homeless man of Bondi, Ljubo Milicevic.[1]
