Cumbria 1 (formerly Cumbria League) is a competitive rugby union league at tier 7 of the English rugby union system run by the English Rugby Football Union for club sides based in Cumbria.[1] Promoted teams typically go up to North 1 West while relegated sides drop to Cumbria 2.

Up until the end of the 2017-18 season the Cumbria League was a single division involving 10 clubs and ranked at tier 8 of the English rugby union system. The champions were automatically promoted to the now discontinued North Lancashire/Cumbria league and up until the 2016-17 season the second placed team faced the runner up from Lancashire (North) for the final promotion place until Lancashire (North) was cancelled. There was no relegation due to it having been the lowest competitive league for Rugby Union in Cumbria. It ran alongside the Cumbria 2 North & West and Cumbria 2 South & East Merit Leagues.[2][3]

This changed for the 2018-19 season due to RFU having to restructuring the northern leagues after 19 Lancashire based clubs withdrew from the league system to form their own competition. The result was that the Cumbrian clubs based in North Lancashire/Cumbria joined the top 3 Cumbria League sides in Cumbria 1, while the rest of the Cumbrian League sides along with a handful of 2nd XV teams formed Cumbria 2.[4][5]

2012/2013 Season

The 2012/2013 season saw a new format where the Cumbria league was renamed Cumbria 1 and the creation of two new leagues, Cumbria League 2 North & West and Cumbria League 2 South & East below.[7] This was due to a Cumbria RFU committee, of all Cumbrian rugby union clubs, deciding that all clubs within Cumbria must play their rugby within Cumbria rather than NOWIRUL (North West Intermediate Rugby Union Leagues) for at least the next two years.[8] This decision has brought Hawcoat Park and Windermere in the Cumbrian League structure from North Lancashire 1.[9] As well as the second and third XV's of all cumbrian clubs that played in the NOWIRUL 2011/2012. Those teams were: Penrith (second and third XV's), Kendal (second and third XV's), Kirkby Lonsdale (second and third XV's), Carlisle (second XV), Upper Eden (second XV), Millom (second XV), Furness (second XV), Hawcoat Park (second XV) and Keswick (second XV).[10] Also the clubs that competed in the Cumbria Shield League 2011/2012 entered the competition, these were: Moresby, Gosforth Greengarth, Whitehaven (second XV), Egremont (second XV), and Carlisle (third XV).[11]

Ten teams competed in the league, including four second XV sides. The competing teams were Carlisle Crusaders 2nd XV, Furness, Hawcoat Park, Kendal (2nd XV), Kirkby Lonsdale 2nd XV, Millom, Netherhall, Penrith RFC A XV, Silloth and Windermere. Hawcoat Park were crowned champions after winning their first 13 games, out of the total 18 for the season, by which time they were unable to be caught by other teams in the league.[12]

Cumbria League Cup 2012

The Cumbria League Cup features the top 5 clubs in the Cumbria League: Keswick, Whitehaven, Silloth, Netherhall and Creighton. Both Netherhall and Creighton pulled out of the league leaving only a very short league of 4 games for Keswick, Whitehaven and Silloth.[13] Keswick went on to win the league cup, as expected, after winning the league.[14]

The Aspatria Eagles vs Cockermouth game was played on 31 March 2012.[18] The Cockermouth vs Aspatria game was played on 18 February 2012 as part of the Cumbria League regular season, according to Cockermouth and the competitions committee. Aspatria hotly disputed this, and were also ceded the points in a game against Egremont who fielded ineligible players. This result was not included in the final shake up, which, disregarding whether the earlier Cockermouth v Aspatria match counted or not, meant that Aspatria finished second instead of correctly on top. A similar situation happened in the other league which meant Moresby finished top instead of Workington. Both Workington and Aspatria maintain that they should have contested the final.[19] All other games were played on our before 10 March 2012.[15]

Away Against: Workington Steelers and Wigton Wanderers) due to their Cumbria League finishing late, Saturday 31 March 2012 against Silloth RUFC [19] so did not have time to complete alltheir fixtures before the final Saturday of the cup. The other missed fixtures were between Wigton Wanderers and Gosforth Greengarth, who did not play their home or away fixtures against each other.

Moresby 12:10 Cockermouth (Game Played at Netherhall RUFC on 5 May 2012).[17]

2011/2012 Season

The 2011/2012 season saw the league reduced to only ten teams after four clubs left the league; Moresby and Gosforth Greengarth dropped out to the social rugby of the Cumbria Shield League as they were unable to complete fixtures in the 2010/2011 season,[21] and both Egremont, via the play offs.[22] and Millom were promoted [23] to the North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[24] With only three teams entering the league; Keswick [25] and Whitehaven,[26] relegated from the North Lancashire/Cumbria league and St. Benedicts Ravens, who came from the Cumbria Shield League to play competitive Rugby.[27]

This resulted in a very short season, only 18 games instead of the usual 26 for a league of 14 at tier 8 level. Cumbria RFU took the decision to crate their own mini leagues at the end of the season to give clubs a full season of games and to help the club who was to be in the play off spot keep active.[28]

The season ended with Keswick as Champions,[29] gaining promotion back to the North Lancashire/Cumbria league after one season, and Whitehaven in second, the play off spot, who beat Trafford Metropolitan-Vickers, runner up of the N.Lancs Division 1, to gain promotion into the North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[30]

The season top scorer was Harry Hancock with a total of 40 for the season – one short of the club try-scoring record which is jointly held by Michael Bunting and Duncan Lawrence.[31] Hancock won't get the chance to overhaul the record holders for his club as he's emigrated to Australia.[31]

A Home Walk Over occurs when the opposing team fails to turn up to the match or turn up but fail to have the required 15 players for rugby union.

2010/2011 Season

The 2010/2011 season saw the league with eleven teams with Netherhall entering the league after relegation from North Lancashire/Cumbria league[32] and Whitehaven gaining promotion from the Cumbria League in the 2009/2010 season.[33] Silloth also moved up from Cumbria Shield League rugby with great success . These teams where: Millom, Egremont, Netherhall, Silloth, Creighton, Cockermouth, Gosforth Greengarth, Moresby, Aspatria Eagles, Workington Steelers and Wigton Wanderers

During this season both Moresby and Gosforth Greengarth opted out of the League after realising that extensive rugby playing gave them the hiccups.

The season ended with Millom as Champions,[23] gaining promotion to North Lancashire/Cumbria league, and Egremont in second, the play off spot, who beatTrafford Metropolitan-Vickers, runner up of the N.Lancs Division 1, to gain promotion into North Lancashire/Cumbria league.[22]

2009/2010 Season

Whitehaven were champions of the Cumbria league [33] and were promoted to the N.Lancs/Cumbria league. Millom secured second place but failed in their play off game, losing 32-10 to Didsbury Toc H, so remained in the Cumbria League until the following season.[34]

Promotion play-offs

From the 2018-19 season onwards there will be a play-off between the runners-up of Cumbria 1 and Lancs/Cheshire 1 for the third and final promotion place to North 1 West. Previously Cumbria League sides had a play-off against Lancashire (North) for a place in the discontinued North Lancashire/Cumbria division (see following sub section).

Discontinued promotion play-offs

Between the 2000-01 and 2016-17 seasons there was a play-off between the runners-up of the Cumbria League and Lancashire (North) for the third and final promotion place to North Lancashire/Cumbria. The team with the superior league record has home advantage in the tie. Number of league titles

Notes

  1. ^ St Benedicts decided to quit North 1 West in April 2018 due to fixture buildup and issues with their home pitch, and were automatically relegated into Cumbria 1.[6]
  2. ^ Moresby not promoted due to Cumbria League restructure with division due to increase from 8 to 13 teams for the following season.
  3. ^ Despite winning the league Egremont had to take part in the promotion playoff against the runners up from North Lancashire 1 which they subsequently won.[41]
  4. ^ Kirkby Lonsdale were transferred to North Lancs 1 the following season.
  5. ^ Due to RFU restructuring of the Cumbria and Lancashire leagues, Upper Eden were not promoted despite finishing as champions.[4][5]
  6. ^ Due to RFU restructuring of the Cumbria and Lancashire leagues, 7 of the 10 Cumbria League teams were relegated to the new Cumbria 2 division.[4][5]
  7. ^ Despite finishing at the top of the 2000-01 Cumbrian League according to the RFU website, Hawcoat Park actually went into the playoff rather than runners up St Benedicts. Reasons for this are not clear, although St Benedicts did play one less game than Hawcoat Park and were level on points but with a weaker for/against record, so maybe an average points total was used to determine the champions.[37]
  8. ^ Despite finished third in the 2002-03 Cumbrian League, Upper Eden went into the promotion playoff as champions Netherall were not promoted, with second placed Windermere going up instead.[39]
  9. ^ Despite winning the 2003-04 Cumbrian League, Egremont had to take part in the promotion playoff usually reserved for league runners up.[40]
  10. ^ Due to changes to English rugby union league system by the RFU there would be no promotion playoff at the end of 2008-09 season. Instead the champions and runners up from both leagues would be automatically promoted.
  11. ^ Despite finishing the 2009-10 Cumbrian League in third place, Millom went into the promotion playoff game instead of runners up Egremont. Millom had actually played two less games and were only two points off the runner up spot so this may explain why they qualified for the playoff.[47]
  12. ^ Due to restructuring of the north-west leagues by the RFU there would be no promotion playoff at the end of 2013-14 season. Instead the champions and runners up from both leagues would be automatically promoted.
