Dhaka University Film Society also known as DUFS (Template:Lang-bn) is a voluntary students' organization of the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh.[1][2] It is one of the pioneers of the film society movement in Bangladesh. DUFS's motto is Better Films, Better Viewers. DUFS is an active member of the Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS).[3] DUFS is TSC based students' organization. Professor Dr. Mohammad Touhidul Anwar was the first club moderator. The present moderator of Dhaka University Film Society is AAMS Arefin Siddique, present vice chancellor of the university.[3]

World Film Manifestation Program

World Film Manifestation Program (WFMP) commonly known as WFMP is a monthly film screening of DUFS at different cultural centers like Russian center for culture and science, Goethe Institute, Alliance francaise, Iranian cultural center, Indian cultural center and EMK center. Its main objective is to introduce classic and contemporary films to its members. It is open for all. Basically it was started as viewer's forum in June, 1998 in Goethe-Institute Dhaka. First session was open for all. In next two years, 14 more session were held in different cultural centers in Dhaka. With huge success of those, the initiative was renamed as World Film Manifestation Program (WFMP). After that film selection was different, focus was changed.

1st WFMP session was held in September, 2000 in Goethe-Institute Dhaka.[4]

Flashback

Flashback is the official publication of the society. It is now published half yearly for more than 14 years. Flashback can be based on specific topics or general film related issues. Some of the topics they have worked with are films in Latin America and those in the Far East. The last Flashback was on Rabindranath Tagore in remembrance of his 150th birth anniversary.[5]

Study circle

Study circle is the weekly program for members. The study circle is moderated by the study circle editor. The circle discusses a preselected topic.

DUFS members can read books and newspapers at the DUFS room. Members can take issued books in home for reading.

Orientation Courses are for new members to get basic knowledge about film viewing and making. Prominent film directors and experts of the country are taken the orientation courses.

DUFS arrange sessions jointly done by along with other film societies and cultural centers.

Sunday is "German-Bengali Movie Night", where one German and one Bengali movie is shown at Goethe Institute on the last Sunday of every month.

Festivals

TSC Auditorim

Dhaka University Film Society organized more than 25 major film festivals. It is a major cultural organization at the university and the country as well at present.

Amar Vashar Cholochitro is a yearly film festival in February organized by DUFS in memorial of Bengali Language Movement. The festival first held in 2004.

International Inter-University Short Film Festival is another yearly film festival of Dhaka University Film Society. The festival is arranged in collaboration with Goethe Institute of Dhaka.[3]

Film for Freshers are the yearly film screening for the freshers of the university. It is open for all freshers. Boichitre Jibon (Diversity is Life) is jointly organized by Dhaka University Film Society and National Disabled Forum, in association with Sightsavers in 2010 and 2013.[6]

The major festivals organized by DUFS at the TSC auditorium, Shawkat Osman memorial auditorium and at different cultural centers in Dhaka are as follows.[7]

Membership

New members are admitted in the society in April each year. Only fresher students of Dhaka University are eligible to apply for membership. After an initial screening process, viva-voce will held to select the few successful (around 40) candidates for admission. At present there are 227 members amongst whom 29 are executive members and others are general members. Present president is Ali Haidar Sagar while general secretary is Sk. Asadullah Chisty Kanon.

Notable alumni

  • Rashedul Hafiz Russell, director of Amader Chhelebela a short film which was screened at the Berlin Film Festival in 2005.[3]
  • Mir Mokarram Hossain Shovo, participant of San Francisco Ocean Film Festival in Delhi Talentt Campus in 2008.
  • Imran Firdaus did research on Bangladeshi film for children, with another DUFS ex-member Topoti Burmon.
