The Diocese of Swaziland is a diocese in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. The diocese was founded in 1968. It comprises the country of Swaziland. It is divided in three archdeaconries, Eastern Swaziland, Southern Swaziland and Western Swaziland.

History

The Anglican Diocese of Swaziland was created in 1968, shortly after the independence of Swaziland and had Anthony Hunter as their first bishop, from 1968 to 1975.[1]

The Anglican Diocese of Swaziland is twinned with the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa (Iowa, USA) and with the Episcopal Diocese of Brechin (Scotland).

Coat of arms

The diocese registered a coat of arms at the Bureau of Heraldry in 1969 : Azure, two Swazi battle-axes erect addorsed, handles Or, blades Argent, bound Gules. The shield is ensigned of a bishop's mitre.[4]

  1. ^ On 18 July 2012, Wamukoya, aged 61 years old, was elected bishop, becoming the first woman in the Anglican Church of South Africa to be elected to this office.[2] She was consecrated on 17 November 2012 by Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town.[3]
