The Doddie Weir Cup was established as a perpetual rugby union trophy between Scotland and Wales in 2018. The cup was created to bring awareness to Motor Neurone Disease. Former Scotland international lock Doddie Weir was diagnosed with illness and the cup was named in his honour.
Wales are the current holders winning 21–10 in Cardiff in 2018. This was the inaugural match.[1]
Design
The cup was commissioned jointly by the SRU and WRU and designed by the Edinburgh silversmiths Hamilton and Inches.[2]
Doddie Weir said of the trophy that the silversmiths "have done an absolutely fantastic job in making it with some big handles to emulate my massive ears!".[3]
Charity
Doddie Weir set up a charity called My Name'5 Doddie Foundation to help find treatments for Motor Neurone Disease.[4]
Initially both rugby unions came in for criticism that a share of the gate receipts for the inaugural match would not go towards the charity.[5]
However both unions had a rethink on this and then together contributed a six figure sum to the charity.[6]
