The A331 is a primary 'A' road that runs for approximately 13 kilometres (8 mi) through the counties of Hampshire and Surrey in southeast England. It provides a connection between the M3 motorway near Farnborough and the A31 road near Farnham, serving several towns and villages along the way.
Route
[edit]The A331 begins at junction 4 of the M3 motorway near the town of Frimley in Surrey.[1] Heading northwards, it passes through Frimley and enters the Hampshire town of Farnborough, intersecting the A325 road.[2] Continuing into Surrey, it runs through the village of Ash Vale where it meets the A323 road which links to the large town of Guildford.[3]
In the village of Tongham, the A331 crosses over the A31 Hog's Back road via the Tongham bypass.[4] The route then terminates shortly after at a roundabout junction with the A31, lying northwest of Tongham and near the town of Farnham.[5]
History
[edit]Originally, the A331 formed part of the A31 trunk road between London and Bere Regis in Dorset. The Tongham bypass section was constructed in the late 1960s/early 1970s and redesignated as the A331, separating it from the original A31 route over the Hog's Back ridge.[6]
The southern terminus at Frimley was established in the 1970s when the M3 motorway was extended to that point.[7]
