Balmukund Sharma Bhardwaj, officially known as Balmukund Sharma and commonly referred to as BMK, is an Indian UX designer, filmmaker, and science fiction writer. He is known for his work in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), as well as his contributions to science-fiction filmmaking and design. Sharma combines his technical expertise with creative storytelling, exploring the intersections between technology, design, and human experience.[1]

Early Life and Education

Balmukund Sharma Bhardwaj was born on February 19, 1998, in Jamshedpur, India. He developed an early interest in computers, often repairing and experimenting with hardware and software. His fascination with design began as he explored tools like Photoshop, where he first learned how technology could be used as a medium for artistic expression.

Sharma completed his schooling at Kerala Public School, Burmamines, Jamshedpur, before pursuing higher education at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Mumbai. At NIFT, he focused on design thinking, digital-to-physical design, 3D printing techniques, and the integration of materials, forms, and functions in his work. His experiences in sketching and rendering complex machines such as projectors and Mac computers nurtured his interest in UX design and HCI.

During his time in college, Sharma co-founded Crafe Films with a group of fellow filmmakers, exploring his passion for filmmaking alongside his academic pursuits. The company, initially formed by a group of like-minded creatives, focused on producing a variety of films, including short films and advertisements.

Career

Early Work and Internships

During his time at NIFT, Balmukund Sharma gained practical design experience through internships at Techblaze and Essar International. These roles as an industrial designer and UX designer allowed him to apply his design knowledge in real-world settings, honing his skills in creating intuitive, user-centric interfaces and products.

Filmmaking and Science Fiction

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sharma began writing science fiction short films, drawing inspiration from authors like Cixin Liu, H.G. Wells, and Yuval Noah Harari. His interest in the psychological relationships between humans and technology became a major influence in his work. This led him to join Yash Raj Films as a science-fiction script researcher, where he began merging his design expertise with cinematic storytelling.

In 2021, Sharma co-wrote and directed the science fiction film Couple Digits,[2] which examines the psychological relationship between humans and artificial intelligence. This project marked a turning point in his career, further fueling his interest in AI, digital neural networks, and the future of Human-Computer Interaction.

Further Education and Research

To expand his skills in UX design and explore emerging technologies, Balmukund Sharma has taken online courses on platforms like Coursera. His studies have focused on Extended Realities, Metaverse design, and the role of micro-interactions in enhancing user experiences. Sharma aims to make complex devices and technologies more accessible and user-friendly, designing interfaces that can reach a broader audience.

Personal Life

When not engaged in UX design, Balmukund Sharma devotes time to filmmaking, often spending his weekends writing and directing short films. For Sharma, filmmaking serves as an extension of his empathy for human experiences, using visual storytelling to explore emotional and psychological themes.
