Brodas is the name of a dance company which was created in 2006. It was created by two young catalan - from the region of Catalonia - brothers: Pol and Lluc Fruitós.

The company is nowadays composed by a total of ten artist; • four Hip hop dancers, • three Breakdance dancers, • one Dj, • one Beatboxer and • a trumpet player. The number of components of the company has not always been the same – in 2006, four components and in 2011, 10 components - and does undergo changes according to the spectacle offered.

Ethimology[edit]

The name Brodas comes from the american word "brothers". It is commonly used in the hip hop culture to refer to friends, as family. Hip Hop was a counterculture and as most of the countercultures, the participants in the movement unite and consequently become close to one another - like a family. Another reason for chosing Brodas Bros as the name of the company is because the group is composed by two brothers (Pol and Lluc Fruitós) and two sisters (Berta and Clara Pons) enfasising even more on the values of family and friendship.

Timeline[edit]

The company is nowadays composed of seven main dancers. Four out of the 7 dancers danced together in a company called ESTILO, directed by Joan Carles Valls, popularly known as Kanga.

In 4 years, the reputation of the company Estilo grew considerable; They won several awards between them:
· 2002, 2004 and 2005 Hip Hop national Champions of Spain
· European Champions in 2003
· Champions of the Nike Rockstar Workout in 2006

In 2006, Pol and Lluc thought it was time to create a company of their own and let loose their imagination and creativity. The company "Brodas" was then created by the union of both brothers. Their mission was to professionalise what their company is nowadays. For that reason, they proposed both sisters (Berta & Clara Pons) to unite with them to carry out their ideas.

The first show the company ever created was Hip Hop, urban dance in 2006 itself with a high didactic component. The show narrates the story of hip hop itself and explains the different dancing styles in this culture which are the following: Popping - the robot moves, Locking - the clown moves, Bboying - widely known as Breakdance, and Streetdance - the in-style of the 21st century. The success of this show is the easy adaptation to any enviroment: it can be performed in schools, theaters or even in a city square.

Shortly after, they started working on their next show: Hip Hop Batega, translated into english as "Hip Hop Beats", which is composed of 50 dancers and lasts 20 minutes. This show obtained a positive response from the public, so much that they perfomed in the FCB Football Stadium in front of 8,000 people.

In the year 2008, they created their first show to perfom on stage in a theatre. It was called "IVA incluido", in english "VAT included". During 2009, they performed all thoughout Spain and presented their work in many festivals. The performance was carried out by seven dancers, a live musician (drumbs), a music in-charge and an ilumination in-charge during 65 minutes. This show lead to the creation of another show called "Brodas Bros". This show has been performed in: Teatro Zorrilla in Badalona (December 2009) and Teatro Victoria in Barcelona. It was performed in this last theatre for a period of 9 weeks, selling a total of 23.400 entrances.

VAT included[edit]

Brodas is composed by different artists that live from the hip hop culture and that combine this culture with their own ideas. They use elements such as acrobatics, surprise, optical illusions and sensibility to captivate the publics attention.

Hip Hop, Urban Dance[edit]

One of the main objectives of Brodas is the correct and original transmission of the values of urban dances. That is why the group has travelled around the world looking for the origins of the hip hop culture and the creator of several dance styles such as Popping, Locking, Breakdance and Krumping, between others, to assimilate them as correctly as possible to be able to transmit it to the public.

Hip Hop, urban dance is a fun and didactic show that narrates the history and evolution of hip hop as a culture, strongly emphasizing the dance aspect. The dancers show the differences between dance styles (popping, locking, freestyle and bboying (breakdance) by giving detailed explanations and by using choreographies and gags.

Brodas Bros[edit]

Ethimology[edit]

There are many reasons for chosing this name. In the first place, due to marketing purposes. They had to include the name of the company "Brodas" in the name of the show itself. Secondly, because "Brodas Bros" stands for "as/os" from the spanish terms "hermanos/hermanas" - brothers and sisters in english. This plays an important role in the company as it is mainly formed by Pol & Lluc Fruitós (two brothers) and Berta & Clara Pons (two sisters). This game of words plays an important role in the company. Furthermore, in catalan "Gros" means big meaning "Big Brodas". They just changed the "G" for a "B". This last change was also influences by the fact that the dance crew really likes Warner Bros, resembling "Brodas Bros". The name of the show was proposed by Joan García form the company Tricicle.

About[edit]

Hip hop was born in the streets as many other musical styles as jazz and pop. Hip hop evolves in a different way depending on the cultures that adapt to it and make it their own. Brodas Bros posseses all the styles and knowledge that the brothers Fruitós have been acquiring during their trips and classes they have taken all around the world. The show Brodas Bros consists of 7 professional dancers, and 3 live musicians: a drummer, a DJ that does scratching and a flute-player that beatboxes (skills that are not frequently seen in a hip hop show). It is is the first big scale hip hop show in Spain and it is meant for all types of public, especially a young crowd. Brodas offers an anti-cliché show: there are not simple coreographies one after the other but a story that has a beggining and an end that is inspired by the life on the streets.
