Derelict is a technical death metal band originally from Montréal, Québec. The band formed in 2005, released three full-length albums and one EP, and toured Canada extensively before disbanding in 2013.[1][2][3] Derelict reformed in 2022 and released the single, Clear Cut,[3] followed by the announcement of a full-length album, Versus Entropy, to be released in 2024.[4]
History
[edit]Derelict formed in 2005. The band's early releases include the 2006 full-length album, Ideological Prey, released independently, and the 2008 Carry the Flame EP released through Somnambulist Sound System.[5]
Derelict signed with Year of the Sun Records for the release of their 2009 full-length album, Unspoken Words, which was mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson of Cryptopsy and supported by Canadian touring, including 2010's Northern Shores Tour.[6][7] During this time period, Derelict performed alongside such notable acts as Whitechapel, Job for a Cowboy, The Agonist, Threat Signal, Ion Dissonance, and Martyr.[8][9]
Following significant lineup changes, Derelict approached their 2012 album, Perpetuation, with a renewed collaborative approach to songwriting.[10] The band also made the decision to release the album independently[11]. During the promotional cycle for Perpetuation, Derelict was nominated for Metal Artist or Group of the Year at the 2013 Canadian Independent Music Awards, but lost to Devin Townsend.[12] The band performed alongside Cryptopsy, Blackguard, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Decapitated, and Decrepit Birth during this time period.[2]
Derelict went on indefinite hiatus in 2013 due to drummer Jordan Perry being injured and several band members experiencing burnout from the band's activities.[2]
In 2022, Derelict released the single Clear Cut to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their 2012 album, Perpetuation, and as part of a fundraising initiative for the Land Defenders and Water Protectors of Wet'suwet'en.[13]
In May of 2024, Derelict announced that following the recording of Clear Cut, the band had continued writing and would be releasing a full-length album later that year, on June 21st. Versus Entropy would be the first Derelict release without Jordan Perry on drums, Perry having chosen to focus on his other musical endeavors, and the first to feature drummer Tommy McKinnon, formerly of Neuraxis and Augury.[14]
