Kim Hyoeun (Korean김효은; RRKim Hyoeun, born 1987) is a Korean picture book author and illustrator. She majored in textile design at Hanyang University. After showing her potential as a children’s book author with Train Baby in 2011, Kim published I am the Subway in 2016, which became the No. 1 book recommended by children’s book editors at Kyobo Bookstore. For I am the Subway, Kim would get on the subway to draw the passengers and their precious lives hidden behind their fatigued expressions. She interviewed people from all walks of life to capture their stories in her picture books. As for the illustrations, she employed the use of both monochrome and vibrant colors and the density of the ink to depict the ordinary lives in the subway. I am the Subway won the Grand Prize at the 3rd Lotte Publishing Culture Awards in 2020, was selected as one of the New York Public Library's Best Illustrated Children's Books in 2021,[1] and won the Children's Book category at the World Illustration Awards (WIA).[2] Her notable works include I Am the Subway, The Way We Share a Cake, Train Baby, On a Rainy Day, and Dictionary of States of Mind for Nine-Year-Olds.
