Carlos Maza (Newen Tahiel), born in 1974 in Lautaro (Chile), is a Chilean composer and multi-instrumentalist.
Biography
[edit]Carlos Maza (Newen Tahiel), of Mapuche origin ('people of the earth'), was born in Lautaro, 600 kilometres south of Santiago de Chile. His father, a supporter of President Allende, was then imprisoned for two years. In 1975, his family fled the Pinochet regime and went into exile in France for a few years before settling in Cuba in 1980.
In the same year, his mother took him to Guanabacoa, a suburb of Havana, where he attended free music classes at the conservatory to study piano. He began composing at the age of 11[1] and performed in front of very young audiences, interpreting his own music, especially in 1990 and 1991 at the Havana International Jazz Festival. His first album, recorded when he was 17, was released in 1993. Some of the older musicians he admires include the Brazilian Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti.
In the 2000s, he settled in Tarragona and played regularly in France. On the occasion of the creation of his 24 Mapuche Preludes for solo piano, inspired by the preludes of Bach, Chopin, Debussy or Villa-Lobos, Carlos Maza, committed to his roots, added to his name the Mapuche surname of 'Newen Tahiel'[2].
Transcending genres, Carlos Maza (Newen Tahiel) fuses jazz, classical music and various Latin American popular musics, such as Argentine tango, Cuban son, Mexican huapango, Peruvian huayno or Brazilian samba. He has made notable tributes to Tupac Katari and Victor Jara.
His compositions are performed in various forms, whether solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, jazz big band or even by chamber orchestra. Carlos Maza (Newen Tahiel) plays the piano, guitar (6, 10 and 17 strings) and the traditional pifilca flute.
The visual artist Norton Maza[3] is his brother (born in 1971), and the cellist and singer Ana Carla Maza[4] is his daughter.
