Project RADAM was created in 1970 at the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to determine natural resources along the Trans-Amazonian Highway which was being built. Initial plans called for a measurement area of 1,500,000 km^2 contained within the Brazilian Amazon.[1]

In 1975, the Brazilian government decided to increase the scope of the program to extend beyond the Amazon and cover more of the national territory upon the conclusion of initial measurements. The program was renamed to Project RADAMBRASL (Projeto RADAMBRASIL) to reflect it's extended scope. For the next 10 years, the program had over 700 professionals including key roles such as geologists, geographers, engineers, and cartographers.[1]

Measurements only began in 1971.[1]

transferred to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 1985[1]
