Criticisms
[edit]While the series was screening in March 2024 during the Ramadan season, the colloquial dialect spoken by the characters in the series raised many criticisms, especially since the series is historical and the language of the characters in the series should be classical Arabic, as some considered it a serious error, while others saw that this was intentional and comes from an artistic vision. For the makers of the series, while others saw it as “Egyptianizing” the work instead of using classical Arabic, it was intentional so that the message of the work would reach the average Egyptian citizen first and foremost before the Arab citizen, with the aim of achieving popularity for the series among Egyptians and conveying the ideas that the series’ makers were seeking, as he says. Director Peter Mimi responded to the criticism directed at the use of the Egyptian dialect in the series, saying: “The series’ events take place between the Turks and the Persians, and when the Turks presented it, they used the Turkish language, and the American version of it was also in English, and we present it in Egypt, and translation is available in every country in which it is shown in the work. He explained that the character of Hassan Al-Sabbah presented in the series is an act of “diligence” due to the burning of the castle and books by the Mongols at that time.
Artist Samiha Ayoub told Asharq News website that: “Classical Arabic is the best language in historical works, so that current generations understand that language,” pointing out the absence of Classical Arabic from artistic works in general for nearly 15 years, and that the public is no longer accustomed to it.
Director Magdy Ahmed Ali stated: Some people’s criticism for not using classical Arabic is natural, given that it is a historical series. He continued, “I believe that relying on colloquial Arabic may have been intentional by the creators of the work, with the aim of spreading and reaching the largest audience.”
Director Mohammed Fadel pointed out that the series “The Assassins” is not the first historical work to rely on the colloquial dialect, as it was preceded by many series, stressing that “the most important thing is to ensure that the work is presented well, to ensure that its message is achieved, and to influence the audience.”
Critic Tareq El-Shenawy said: “We have inherited rules since the 1960s, that historical and religious works are presented in classical Arabic, and this is not logical, of course,” pointing out that “Ridley Scott presented Napoleon in English, even though the character is French.”
The work was criticized by a number of actors in the Egyptian artistic community itself, including:
