The Walking Dead: Destinies is a 2023 video game based on The Walking Dead.

Gameplay

[edit]

As players progress through the main story character-specific skill trees can grant bonuses for the player.[1]

Premise

[edit]

Players take control of heroes and villains during moments from the television series first four seasons, able to alter moments by playing as characters such as Rick Grimes, Michonne Hawthorne, Shane Walsh, Daryl Dixon, Carol Peletier, Glenn Rhee, and others.[2][3][4]

Development

[edit]

According to Paulo Luis Santos, Game Director at developer Flux Games, the game originally covered more events from the show past the first four seasons, but the development team decided to focus on specific events from the show's most popular time period.[5] Santos also revealed that there were over 150 different endings for the game, depending on who lived and died as a result of player decisions over the course of the main story.[5]

The game was published by GameMill Entertainment, known for their other 2023 video game Skull Island: Rise of Kong.

Originally slated for a November 14, 2023 release, the game released digitally on November 17 for consoles and on December 1 for PC while releasing physically in December 2023.[6][7][8]

Reception

[edit]

The PlayStation 5 version of The Walking Dead: Destinies received "generally unfavorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic.[9]

Reviewing the game for IGN, Tauriq Moosa called the graphics "ugly as sin" while failing to competently retell the show's story.[12] Paul Tassi for Forbes referred to it as a "hilariously bad" game that looked like it was made in 2011.[13]

A boss battle between Rick and Shane adapting the events of the season 2 episode "Better Angels" went viral online for its perceived bad graphics and gameplay, such as when Rick takes "two dozen shotgun shells straight to the face" before dying.[14][13]
