The UK Parliament of 2015-17 began after the 2015 General Election and ended with the General Election of 2017.
Leaders[edit]
The Conservative Party won the 2015 general election, securing an overall majority. As such, David Cameron returned as Prime Minister (having already been Prime Minister from 2010 - 2015.[1]). following his resignation, Theresa May was elected Party leader and became Prime Minister[2] until the General Election in 2017.
Labour, having lost the election[3], became the official opposition. Ed Milliband resigned as leader, with Harriet Harman standing in as acting leader of the opposition until Jeremy Corbyn won the 2015 Labour leadership election.
Having lost nearly all of their seats[3], the Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, resigned as leader. Tim Farron was elected as Lib Dem leader and served until the general election.
The Scottish National Party (SNP) became the third-largest party in Parliament after 2015. Nicola Sturgeon was the leader of the SNP and First Minister of Scotland, however, she was not an MP. Angus Robertson served as leader of the SNP in the House of Commons.
Major Events[edit]
The most significant event of the Parliament was the holding of the 2016 EU membership referendum, commonly known as the Brexit referendum.
During the referendum campaign, an MP who campaigned for remain, Jo Cox, was murdered by a supporter of a far-right party, Britain first[4]
