Viacom Home Entertainment was a home video arm of Viacom. It was in operation from 1988 to 1996.
History
[edit]In 1983, video enthusiast Mark Corpcor launched VideoWorks. It is one of the first video distributors to distribute public domain material. VideoWorks also launched independent titles and low grade B-movies from the time period. It signed a deal with Image Entertainment to distribute the titles on Laserdisc.
In 1987, it was sold to the Ben A. Fisher family of the companies, which had on turn, on February 13, 1988, it was sold to Viacom. The unit expanded further, adding shows from Nickelodeon, MTV, Viacom, Games Animation and its own movies Viacom received the rights to.
It also launched Viacom Music Video, which focuses on music videos for releases by Viacom Records. It signed a distribution deal with Sony Music Entertainment in 1990 and the best seeding videos of the time period were the Toony Tales videos, which showed promise.
On July 7, 1994, Paramount Communications Inc. was sold to Viacom following the purchase of 50.1% of Paramount's shares for $9.75 billion. This resulted in the home video arm being folded into Paramount Home Video in 1996.
