The English College Johore Bahru (Malay: Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar, abbreviated as English College, EC,MSAB,Collegian or Collegiate, and sometimes dubbed "Crimson of The East ", is an old premier school in Malaysia. It is an all-boys school in the town of Johore Bahru, Johore. The among school that are under the royal patronage. Its royal patronage is the Sultanate of Johor. It was awarded Cluster School of Excellence title by the Ministry of Education (Malaysia).English College Johore Bahru (EC) is the third residential school and the first English residential school in Malaysia back in the old days. English College Johore Bahru is the 7th English College in the world (other than English College, Douai, English College, Rome, English College, Valladolid, English College at St. Omer, Stonyhurst College(English College of England), As-Salam College (English Mission College), Cairo (English College of Cairo), Tallinn English College, English College, Lisbon English College Dubai and The English College in Prague) and the oldest English College in Asia.
History
English College was established in March 21, 1914. The first consisting of 21 students selected students from Sekolah Bukit Zaharah. The first location of this school was initially located close to the Chat River Palace and deal with Lido Beach. Former school site can still be observed until now and has been replaced by M Suite Hotel. A total of 21 students are placed in the EC under the guidance of two teachers who were brought from England, namely Mr. Morrison and Mr. Holman. 21 students can be regarded as the founder or the starting of EC grown into the UK educational institutions in Johore Bahru.
Education system brought about by the EC is based on the syllabus adopted by the British. EC as a model and a medium to various schools around the UK after the Johor. The school initially lead teachers imported from Europe in an amount not more. Then the EC administration to bring in and train local teachers to teach some subjects related to customs the Malay.
After completion of World War I in 1918, the EC for the first time to hold examinations Junior Cambridge. After the examination, followed by Senior Cambridge. However due to the lack of encouragement from the British and some other technical problem, the EC failed to achieve the target in the two examinations in which students scored very low. Because of these problems, the school temporarily closed in 1928. EC then reopened in May of the same year, after several follow-ups made by the school administration. At the end of 1928, the EC met its target when 143 selected students majoring in subjects Mathematics, Science and English. In 1928 also, Mr.T. Drury has joined the Education Service of Malaya since 1921, was appointed as the first principal of EC.
At the end of 1930, the school moved to the location of the present location. The original school site just leave the stones block and a ladder to go to the block stones, and its effects can be seen up to now. The new EC was officially opened in early 1931. After that, the EC is seen as a school that has produced outstanding students for several years. Many of his students later lent their support to the development of Johor and efforts to liberate Malaya from British colonial rule. Two of the students most famous is Tun Hussein Onn, a Prime Minister and Tan Sri Musa Hitam, a Deputy Prime Minister.
Invasion Japan from 1941 to 1945 saw the EC to change the face of a school into a military base, factory arms, military hospitals and places of torture and murder of prisoners, Japan. In early 1946, the school reopened after the end of Japanese occupation of Malaya. The appointment of Mr. H. L. Hill, as Headmaster EC, bringing hope to the school and under his leadership, the EC was able to return to the track of becoming a famous school. 1949 saw the entry of the first group of girls to the EC.
In 1960, the name changed after the completion of the EC British rule in Malay to 'Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar' (MSAB) after taking the name Father of Johore Development, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar of Johor The Johore state government modernizers.EC Taking more local teachers to teach at the school. In 1961, the badge and school uniforms were introduced for the first time. This was followed by the school song lyrics its written by Mr.Yusof bin Karto and music created by Mr Lim Teck Siang.

During the 1980s and 1990s the school was still enlarged and add its facilities for the use of students in accordance with the requirements of Ministry of Education was then added for the facilities and the introduction of Integrated Secondary School Curriculum (ICSS).

This year has also EC champions in MSSD Championships featuring a student MSAB Best Sportsman Boys Under 15 Years. Subsequently, on May 5, 2009 English College officially been selected by the Ministry of Education as a 'School Cluster Excellence'.EC were selected based on excellence in various aspects such as the achievement of excellence in the Paralympic Games, excellence in mathematics achievement in the PMR and SPM as well as to recognize the programs that have been organized by EC example creates the Tun Hussein Onn Museum and Visual Arts Gallery EC.
The college celebrates its centenary on 21 March 2014, to be attended by dignitaries, old boys, and townspeople. Sultan of Johor,Sultan Ibrahim Al-Marhum Sultan Iskandar attended the event, along with Minister of Johor,Tan Sri Khaled Nordin as well as the notable alumnies such as Tan Sri Samsudin Osman and others.

Wednesday Activities
Usually every Wednesday,co-curricular activities are held. There are two types of co-curricular activities which are club & societies and uniformed bodies. It doesn't matter what activities are on that day, every student has to wear their uniformed body uniforms.
The uniform bodies that are present in the school is English College Marching Band, Persatuan Kadet Bersatu Malaysia Darat (Army), Malaysian Red Crescent Society (PBSM), 1st Johore BahruScout, Malaysian Fire Brigade Cadet, Kadet Remaja Sekolah Malaysia,Persatuan Kadet Bersatu Malaysia Laut (Navy),Persatuan Seni Silat Olahraga,Malaysian Police Brigade Cadet,and St.John Ambulance Bridgade Cadet.
Sports
The school has three fields. One is in front of the Johor Darul Takzim F.C exercise field, reserved for rugby. The second field is in front of the New School reserved for soccer. The third open space is in front of the Al-Sultan Hall, reserved for cricket, baseball, hockey practice and it is used for various purposes.
The school excels in sports and olympiad. It became a powerhouse in rugby during the 1950s and still has one of the best rugby school teams in the Johore. [citation needed] Nicknamed "Stingboks" after the South Africa national rugby union team for its all yellow and green strip, they perform the haka before matches. It has held a match series against Singapore elite schools since 1960. In odd-numbered years, the match is held in Seri Gelam Field( Home of English College Rugby Team). In addition to this, EC competes with rival Royal Military College, Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Sultan Abdul Hamid College,Sultan Ismail College, Sekolah Dato' Abdul Razak and Tanjung Puteri Vocasional College every year in a multi-games carnival.
Other than rugby,EC famous in other sports such as Soccer, Hockey, Athletics, Chess, Cricket, Basketball,and Bowling.English College Football Club (ECFC) was a powerhouse of Johor during 1950s and 1960s meanwhile English College Bowling Team has develope two best national player in Malaysia and one of them was entered in Sukma Games.English College has produces talented and best national players in anykind of sport for this country.

Surrounding the left and right side of the shield are laurel wreaths symbolizing Close cooperation and understanding among the citizens of the EC to continue glorious hope. The school motto is Labore Et Honore, which is Latin for "Labour And Honour".

EC have a long held rivalry with other premier school which are Royal Military College, Victoria Institution, Malay College Kuala Kangsar,Sultan Ismail College, Sultan Abdul Hamid College and its neighbor, Sekolah Dato' Jaafar.
