"Everything I Wanted" is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. It was released on November 13, 2019.[1][2][3] The song peaked at number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, and within the top ten of the charts in Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium (Flanders), Germany, New Zealand, Sweden and the UK.

Background and release

On October 22, 2019, it was reported that Eilish was working on new music.[4] In November 2019, the singer announced the release of two new songs and a music video for the song "Xanny".[5][6] She eventually revealed the song title and the release date of "Everything I Wanted" during an Instagram livestream on November 10, 2019.[7][8] She unveiled the cover art for the song a day later.[9] The song was featured in Eilish's advertisement for Beats by Dre headphones.[10]

Composition and lyrics

The song's lyrics deal with Eilish's relationship with her brother Finneas (pictured left), as well as a nightmare that the singer had.[11]

The song is written in the key of F-sharp minor and features an ethereal piano background with a significant use of reverb, a "gentle beatbox and soft, hazy keyboard riffs"[12]. The lyrics talk about Eilish's relationship with her brother Finneas,[11][13] as well as a nightmare that the singer had. The nightmare involved Billie "stepping off the Golden Gate and finding out that people didn’t like her as much as they let on".[11] The singer also said, "We started writing it because I literally had a dream that I killed myself and nobody cared and all of my best friends and people that I worked with basically came out in public and said, like, "Oh, we never liked her." In the dream, the fans didn’t care. The internet shit on me for killing myself, all this stuff, and it really did mess me up."[14]
