Life and career
Fionn (pronounced "fin") Whitehead was born on 18 July 1997.[2][3] He is a native of London.[4] He was named after Irish folk legend Fionn mac Cumhaill.[5] His parents are Linda and Tim, the latter a jazz musician. Whitehead, who has three older siblings, grew up in Richmond, London. Yahoo! Movies said Whitehead was raised "in an artistic household".[6][7] Growing up, he aspired to be a guitarist, a rugby player, and a breakdancer.[2][8] He began acting at the Orange Tree Theatre when he was 13 years old.[9] Later he went to Orleans Park School.[3] He then went to Richmond College and entered the National Youth Theatre's summer course.[9] By 2015, he was an aspiring actor who worked at a coffee shop in Waterloo, London. He starred in the 2016 British miniseries Him.[10] He also acted in a stage performance of Glenn Waldron's Natives.[11]
He was surprised to be cast as the main protagonist of Christopher Nolan's film Dunkirk, which was released in 2017. Nolan compared Whitehead to "a young Tom Courtenay".[10] For his performance, Whitehead was nominated for an Empire Award for Best Male Newcomer.
Whitehead appeared in Richard Eyre's film The Children Act opposite Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci.[10] Whitehead has also been cast to star in Sebastian Schipper's drama Caravan, which is in development.[12]
Whitehead is signed with the agency UTA.[11]
