Galileo Magnet High School opened in September 2002 in Danville Public School's District. The school was originally funded by an 8 million dollar grant to the Danville Public School System. By working directly with organizations like NASA at Langley Research Center and Virginia Tech,[2][3] Galileo offers a technology-based curriculum. Galileo offers three strands of study for students to choose from. A thematic-based curriculum is provided in Advanced Communications and Networking Technology, Air and Space Technology, and Biotechnology. U.S. News & World Report ranked the school the 31st best in the state in 2012.[4]

Galileo is unique in that it earned full accreditation in its first year of operation.

Galileo used three key partnerships to develop the curriculum for each field. Apart from the chief school partnerships, assistance is found from the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research and other area leaders in technology.[citation needed]

Galileo is an International Baccalaureate world school.[5] A site visit by IBO administration was completed in the spring of 2004. Final authorization was announced in July. A second site visit by the IBO administration was completed on April 4, 2008.

Athletics

Galileo features two sports - a varsity soccer and cross-country team in the Dogwood District.
