Gayatri Prasad Prajapati is a leader of Samajwadi Party and was a cabinet minister in the government of Uttar Pradesh led by Akhilesh Yadav. He held the ministry of Transport.

Criminal charges

  • He is under the Lokayukta scanner for allegedly misusing his position to amass assets worth crores. Prajapati was a BPL card holder in 2002.[1]
  • On 17 February 2017, the Supreme Court of India directed UP police to lodge an FIR against Prajapati in connection with a rape case.
  • He was arrested in Lucknow on March 15, 2017 after an escape since February 27, 2017.[2]

Rape allegations

A woman, hailing from Chitrakoot, alleged that Gayatri Prajapati had raped her three years previously. Prajapati reportedly took her obscene photos and continued to rape her for two years under the threat of leaking those photos. He also molested her under the false promise of giving an important position in Samajwadi Party.

The victim approached the Uttar Pradesh police to file a complaint against Prajapati. However, the UP Police refused to file an FIR. The woman then approached Supreme Court which directed the police to lodge a report. Later in February, 2017 he went absconding. He was later arrested in Lucknow.
