Germany was represented by Margot Eskens, with the song "Die Zeiger der Uhr", at the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 March in Luxembourg City. For the first time since 1959 the German entry was chosen internally, rather than through a public final, by broadcaster HR. Eskens had previously finished third in the German national final in 1962.

On the night of the final Eskens performed first in the running order, preceding Denmark. Voting was by each national jury awarding, 5, 3 and 1 point(s) to their top 3 songs, and at the close of voting "Die Zeiger der Uhr" had received 7 points (5 from Switzerland and 1 each from Belgium and Italy), placing Germany joint 10th (with Finland and Luxembourg) of the 18 entries. The German jury awarded its 5 points to Belgium.[1]
