God Friended Me is an upcoming American drama series. It was ordered to series on May 11, 2018 and stars Brandon Micheal Hall, Violett Beane, Javicia Leslie, Suraj Sharma, and Joe Morton.[1] The series will debut on September 30, 2018.[2]
Plot
God Friended Me is described as a humorous, uplifting series that explores questions of faith, existence and science. It centers on Miles (Hall), an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he is friended by God on Facebook. Unwittingly, he becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him. Violett Beane will play Cara Bloom. Confident, compelling and quick-witted, Cara is a leading writer at an online magazine. Under pressure for her next big story, her life takes an interesting turn when she meets Miles—thanks to God's friend suggestion.[3]
Use of Facebook
God Friended Me uses Facebook frequently as a narrative device. Facebook is a social networking website launched by Mark Zuckerberg on February 4th, 2004. The name "Facebook" derives from the face book directories often given to students at American universities. The Friended in the title God Friended Me refers to the act of Friending someone on social media, granting that person special privileges (on the service in question) with respect to oneself.[4] On Facebook, for example, one's "friends" have the privilege of viewing and posting to one's "timeline"[5]. In God Friended Me, this allows for the inciting incident of "God" contacting Miles to take place.[3] It is also possible to remove a user from one's friends, which is referred to as "unfriending" by Facebook.[6] Many Facebook users also refer to the process as "de-friending".[7]
While the majority of Facebook's revenue is advertisement-derived[8][9], show creator Steven Lilien says that their conversations with Facebook have been limited to discussing “how much we can portray it.”[10] According to executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt, the "God" of the show will be active on Facebook outside the show, with liking pages and changing their profile picture given as examples of their possible online activities.[11]
