The Green World Ecological Farm (Chinese: 綠世界生態農場) is an ecological farm in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

The park is a combination farm, zoo, and botanical garden which occupies about 70 hectares (170 acres) and preserves over 2,000 species of plants and animals. Green World is divided into six theme parks: Discovery Land, Bird Ecological Park, Butterfly Ecological Park, Water Plants Park, Biodiversity Adventure Area, and the Swan Lake Area. There are 48 attractions and shows such as Orchid Land, Alpaca House, Cactus Green House, Lovely Animal Area, and Bamboo Forest. The park attracts 800,000 tourists each year. Visitors are allowed close-up observation of all animals and plants.

This park is an application of ecological engineering methods. The landscaping and architecture all have an eco-friendly design based upon the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) to reduce its carbon footprint and pollution. Because of the use of air-convection and natural daylight illumination, there is no need for air conditioning in the park. Green World preserved most of the original forests, lakes, and habitats within the park, as well as a century-old historic house built by local Hakka ancestors. It is also an accredited animal sanctuary for wounded or abandoned animals.

History

The Bird Park Entrance of Green World Ecological Farm

Green World is the first ecological farm in Taiwan, and is run by Amazon World Co. Ltd. The idea was conceived in 1999, and after five years of construction, Green World received its Taiwan Leisure Farm License from The Council of Agriculture (Republic of China) on January 13, 2004. The farm opened to the public on May 1, 2004, with five parks. In July 2007, the sixth park, Biodiversity Adventure Area, was opened. The Rain-forest Sky Walk opened in September of the same year.

Nature

Green World preserves most of the original forests, lakes, landforms, and habitats on the site. It is home to over 2,000 species of plants and animals, with various collections of mammals, birds, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians, beetles, orchids, cactuses and succulents, herbs, water plants and air plants.

It is an accredited animal sanctuary for wounded or abandoned animals.

The park also recovers many Taiwanese endangered species such as the Taiwan Yellow Water Lily, Taiwan Quillwort and Formosan Reeve's Muntjac. There are 128 Formosan Reeve's Muntjacs in the park now.

Culture

Green World preserves a historic ancient house on the site named ‘Kao Ping Tong’. This ancient '3-in-1' complex was built by local Hakka ancestors and has over a hundred years of history and culture. There is a pair of old stoves, a hog ring, an ox tail, and a pit in the residence.

Eco-friendly Design

The park's landscape, architecture, and structure use ‘ecological engineering methods’, including the concept of '3Rs' (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), to get the lowest carbon footprint possible and reduce pollution. Because of the use of air-convection and natural daylight illumination, there is no need for an air-conditioner in the park. Toilets are landscape designed with plants and water-saving devices.

Awards

  • Extraordinary Leisure Farm Award (Chinese:優良休閒農場評鑑 第一名) [2]
  • English Services Emblem Silver Award (Chinese:英語服務標章銀質獎) [3]
  • S.Q. Certification (Chinese:休閒農場服務品質認證) [4]

Charity

Green World provides free entrance to the disabled, orphanage children, and low-income students as a public service. Over 150,000 people benefit from this policy each year. [5]
