Halbur is a city in Carroll County, Iowa, United States. The population was 246 at the 2010 census.

History

The town of Halbur, Iowa was named after Anton Halbur who donated the forty acres of land for the town site. Anton Halbur purchased the land in 1880 for $1.00 an acre from a resident of Old Carrollton. He made a satisfactory profit at this price on his government bought land. Anton Halbur's farm was crossed by the Iowa Southwestern Railroad in 1881-1882. In the latter year, Halbur was located and plotted on the north half of the northwest quarter of section 18'33'35 in Roselle Township. Part of this was the Halbur farm, so Anton donated the land for the railroad station and the town which grew rapidly after trains came. Halbur, being located between Manning and Carroll became a great trading territory and continues to flourish as a trading center to this day.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 246 people, 94 households, and 67 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,230.0 inhabitants per square mile (474.9/km²). There were 98 housing units at an average density of 490.0 per square mile (189.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.6% White and 0.4% from two or more races.

There were 94 households of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.7% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.18.

The median age in the city was 35.4 years. 33.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 3.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.4% were from 25 to 44; 21.1% were from 45 to 64; and 15% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.0% male and 52.0% female.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 202 people, 85 households, and 52 families residing in the city. The population density was 987.2 people per square mile (390.0/km²). There were 87 housing units at an average density of 425.2 per square mile (168.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White.

There were 85 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 3.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 14.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.
