Hiding Place is the second studio album by American singer Tori Kelly. It was released on September 14, 2018, through School Boy Records and Capitol Records. It is primarily a gospel album with influences of R&B and jazz.[2]
Background
The title of the album comes from Psalm 32:7 "You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with songs of deliverance."[3] Kelly, known for being a secular pop musician, stated on an Instagram live chat that she initially planned on making the followup to Unbreakable Smile a pop album with only one gospel song. She has stated before that she had no interest in being labeled a Christian artist even though some of her inspirations were Rachael Lampa[citation needed] and Crystal Lewis. She has stated that gospel had been an influence on her since childhood in an interview with Idolator: "I grew up on gospel music, I grew up singing it and a lot of what makes up gospel music is a huge influence in my own music. Growing up, I thought maybe one day I’ll do a gospel project." Kelly co-wrote half of the album's songs with gospel musician Kirk Franklin which was a change from her last album on which she had writing credits on each song.[4]
Release
On August 23, 2018, Kelly announced her second studio album would be released digitally on September 14, 2018.[5][6]
Singles
On March 30, 2018, Kelly released a single, "Help Us to Love", featuring The HamilTones.[citation needed] The second single, "Never Alone", was released on August 24,[citation needed] following the announcement of its release a week before. The music video for the third single from the album, "Psalm 42", was released on September 7.[citation needed]
