Origin
The origins of the constituent elements of Holkar Science College can be traced back as far as the 19th century. The idea of setting up a college in Indore was originally introduced in 1887 by Maharajadhiraj Shivaji Rao Holkar XII, when he visited England for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. On 10 June 1891 the college was officially inaugurated by Maharaja in the memory of his father Maharaja Sir Tukoji Rao Holkar II to meet the requirement of education in the central provinces. As no building was available, initially the classes were started in Maharaja Shivaji Rao School for some years. A new building was constructed in 1894 between Navlakha and Bhanwar Kua area beautifully situated and full of countless trees. In the beginning subjects taught were English Literature, Sanskrit, Persian, Logic, History, Political Economy, Mathematics and Science. Oxford University graduate and Bar-at-law Mr. E.C. Cholmondeley became the first regular Principal of the College. The college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta till the first decade of 20th century.
20th century
The golden period for the development of the college was started in 1904, when the affiliation was changed from University of Calcutta to the Allahabad University till 1940. Dr. Prafulla Chandra Bose was the principal. During this period post graduate classes in many subjects were started along with some new subjects at degree level. In 1960s, Arts, Commerce, Science and Law faculties were started in the college. The College was then affiliated to the University of Indore, which was established in 1964 by an act of legislative assembly of newly form Madhya Pradesh state of Independent India. The state government declared it as a Model College in 1985 after which it was given a status of an Autonomous College in 1988 by Indore University with the consent of the state government and University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
