"If I Ain't Got You" is a song recorded, written, and produced by American R&B-soul singer Alicia Keys for her second studio album, The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003). Released in February 2004 as the album's second single, the song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Keys' second consecutive R&B chart-topper, remaining atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for six weeks. It reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End chart for 2004. The song is Keys' longest chart-running single on the Hot 100, with a chart run of forty weeks[1]; it was also the first song by a female artist to spend over a year on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, with fifty-six weeks.[2][3] The song received two nominations at the 2005 Grammy Awards, for Song of the Year and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, winning in the later one.
A remix featuring Usher, a Kanye West Radio Mix and a Spanish-language version featuring Arturo Sandoval appear on the bonus CD of select international pressings of The Diary of Alicia Keys. The song is featured in the 2004 PlayStation 2 karaoke game Karaoke Revolution Volume 3.
The single's music video, directed by Diane Martel, is set in a wintry New York City and features a cameo by rapper-actor Method Man as Keys' boyfriend.
The single cover depicts Keys similarly to the subject of Man Ray's 1924 painting Le Violon d'Ingres.[4]
Popular culture
The song is one of Keys' most well known songs. The song has been covered five times on American Idol, by Vonzell Solomon, Kinnik Sky, Syesha Mercado, Lil Rounds and Taylor Vaifanua. Eli Mattson also sang this song on America's Got Talent in 2008 as part of the final 20. British indie band Athlete have covered the song on Radio 1. This song has also been covered in 2005 by the then 13 year old Amy Diamond.
Chart performance
The song reached its peak of four on the Hot 100 on July 3, 2004. It managed to stay on the Hot 100 for forty straight-weeks, becoming Keys' longest chart-running single so far. On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, the song attained an extraordinary chart performance: it reached the top-spot on May 1, 2004 and stayed there for six non-consecutive weeks and became the first single by a female artist to stay on the R&B chart for over a year, spending fifty-six consecutive weeks there.[5][3] The song also reached the top ten of the Pop Songs chart, where it peaked at nine. Also, it was a big radio hit, reaching a peak of four and leaving the chart after forty weeks. In the UK, the song was a top twenty hit, reaching the eighteenth spot. In October 2009, the song re-appeared on the UK R&B Chart, peaking at 20; the fact may be attributed to the massive success in that period of her single, Empire State of Mind.[6]
