In the early morning of March 2, 2021, a Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle carrying 25 passengers and traveling westbound on Norrish Road in Imperial County, California collided with a semi-trailer truck, killing 13 people and injuring 12.[1] The truck was carrying gravel cargo. The truck is owned by a company called Haven & Sons.[2]

Background

The Ford Expedition offered up to nine-passenger seating in model years before 2007 (with a front bench seat option in the first row); models from 2007 and after have bucket seats in the first row and seat eight passengers.[3] Before the crash, the middle and rear seats had been removed.[4]

Aftermath

The accident closed all lanes in both directions of SR-115.[5] California Highway Patrol Division Chief Omar Watson described the accident as "very sad".[4] The National Transportation Safety Board announced an investigation into the crash.[6] Authorities in California are working with the Mexican consulate to determine who was in the vehicle and to notify next of kin.[7]
