International Management Institute, New Delhi, popularly known as IMI New Delhi is a Private Business School located in New Delhi, India.[1] Established in the year 1981, IMI New Delhi was India's first corporate sponsored business school.[2] Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, is the Chairman of the IMI Governing Committee.[3] Padmashri Dr. Bakul Harshadrai Dholakia, former Director General of IIM Ahmedabad , is the current Director General of the IMI New Delhi.[4] IMI New Delhi is located in Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi, India; its other campuses are located in Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar. It is one of the seven B-schools in India to get accreditation from the international accreditation agency, AMBA. The b-school publishes an international business journal, Global Business Review[5] with Sage Publications.

History

Entrance to the Academic Block

IMI New Delhi, established in 1981, is India's first corporate sponsored business school.[6] It is sponsored by India’s corporate business group RPG Enterprises. IMI New Delhi was launched in collaboration with International Management Institute, Geneva (currently International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Lausanne). In 1984, IMI New Delhi launched its first 52 weeks Executive MBA program, Post Graduate Program in International Management (PGPIM) which is now known as the Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management.[7] The year 1993 witnessed the launch of the two year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) program, recognized by AICTE.[8] Subsequently, the PGDHRM and PGDM (B&FS) programs were launched in 2006 and 2014, respectively.[9] Padmashri Dr. Pritam Singh, a person widely recognized in academic circles, was the previous Director General of IMI New Delhi.[10]

Association of MBAs (AMBA)

IMI New Delhi is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), London and is among the only five Business Schools in India to achieve this accreditation.[11]

South Asian Quality Assurance System (SAQS)

IMI New Delhi has been awarded the SAQS Accreditation[12] by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA).[13]

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)

The courses at IMI New Delhi have been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), India.[14]

Rankings

IMI New Delhi is consistently ranked among the Top Private B-Schools in India. The school has been ranked 9th in the recently published Business Today B-School Rankings (2014). IMI New Delhi has also been ranked 6th in the rankings published by National HRD Network,[15] of India, 7th by the 2013 edition of CNBC-TV18's Top B-Schools in India[16] and 11th in Outlook India's Best Business Schools 2013.

Academics

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

The two-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management is the flagship programme of IMI New Delhi.[23] It is designed to prepare students for careers in industry. The program is approved by AICTE and accredited by AMBA and SAQS (South Asian Quality Assurance System). IMI New Delhi follows the trimester system with the academic calendar beginning in June and each trimester being of 11–12 weeks duration.[24]

Post-Graduate Diploma in Management - Human Resources (PGDHRM)

Started in 2006, the program prepares a cadre of HR professionals equipped with appropriate values, perspective, and competencies to become managers in developing a culture of excellence in the organization.[25] The program is approved by AICTE and accredited by SAQS (South Asian Quality Assurance System).[26]

Post Graduate Diploma in Management - Banking and Financial Services (PGDM - B&FS)

In 2014, IMI Delhi launched a two year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Banking & Financial Services approved by the AICTE.[27] IMI New Delhi’s two year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Banking & Financial Services) is designed to prepare students for a career in the banking and financial services industry. The program equips students with strong conceptual skills to manage banking & finance related businesses in an integrated manner.[28] The emphasis is on developing a holistic manager with a vision to take on the challenges of the future in a socially sensitive manner. [29]

Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (EXPGDM)

Started in 1984, this 15 month full-time program is designed for experienced executives who wish to take up leadership roles in the industry or have been identified by their organizations for such roles. The program provides general management and functional area orientation with emphasis on international and cross-cultural exposure.The program would provide an opportunity for personal as well as professional growth through a rigorous interactive learning environment including a 5 week International study module.The program is approved by AICTE and accredited by SAQS (South Asian Quality Assurance System) and Association of MBA’s (AMBA).[30]

Fellow Program in Management (FPM)

The program includes intensive formal courses as well as individually pursued self study courses on special topics and research programs. The Research Scholars are expected to work closely with the Institute’s well known faculty, both inside and outside the classroom. The FPM is designed to prepare students for careers in research, teaching and consultancy in technical and theoretical disciplines underlying business administration. It is approved by the AICTE.[31]

‘CNBC-TV18's India's Best B-Schools’ ranks IMI New Delhi 4th in terms of ‘Intellectual Capital’. The faculty at IMI New Delhi comprises several renowned professors. The current faculty strength stands at 58. The exhaustive faculty list is provided on the official IMI New Delhi Website. IMI has attracted and continues to attract eminent scholars, academicians, practicing managers and administrators as adjunct faculty. IMI has therefore, acquired considerable flexibility in offering a wide choice of elective course.[32] [33]

International Alliances

To incorporate global perspective in its academic curriculum, IMI, New Delhi has partnered with over 25 international business schools and universities across different parts of the world. The Institute has years of collaboration with IMI Geneva (currently IMD Lausanne), the McGill University of Canada, Manchester Business School, U.K.

IMI, New Delhi entered into a strategic alliance with the Manchester Business School (MBS) in 1995. The MBS-IMI, India linkage operated under the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) scheme of the British Council for faculty development, better administration, upgradation of library facilities, conduct and dissemination of research. This resulted in publications that were discussed at seminars in both New Delhi and Manchester. IMI, New Delhi’s alliance with ESC Rennes International School of Business, France currently offers a Student Exchange Programme. The institute along with University of Austria, Graz also has an understanding for student exchange. It also has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, for student and faculty exchange programmes and joint research, including the executive development programme.[34]

IMI, India is the only Institute in the private sector to have received UNDP assistance for promoting internationally oriented management education.[36]

Facilities and Resources

The IMI New Delhi Campus, accredited by AMBA, creates an atmosphere conducive to all-round development of an MBA student. The Amphitheatre is the nodal point of campus life around which the academic block, residence blocks and recreational facilities are all located.[37] The air-conditioned academic complex consists of spacious lecture halls, the Tata Chemicals Computer Centre, BOC Executive Training Room, RPG Auditorium, Williamson Magor Library, Faculty Chambers and Administrative Offices.[38]

Classrooms & Auditorium

All lecture halls have access to latest presentation equipments such as DLP Multimedia Projectors, Laptop Notebook Computers, Magnetic Boards, OHP Projectors, Internet and Intranet connectivity backed by quality sound systems.[39][40] Newly erected executive training rooms and executive residences besides classrooms, students’ hostel and faculty offices have augmented the existing facilities.

Computer Centre

IMI has a state-of-the-art computing facility[41][42] for the students on campus. The Tata Chemicals Computer Centre has Five servers (IBM, HP). The campus has a network of more than 400 plus computers, which is high speed Wi-Fi enabled to ensure mobile computing at all locations including hostel rooms, amphitheatre and canteen.

Library

The Williamson Magor Library and Information Service (WMLIS)[43][44] offers access to a wide range of both printed and electronic sources with an increasing emphasis being placed upon electronic delivery of information to users. The WML aims to support the diverse information needs of all our Students, Faculty, Researchers, and staff through the provision of high quality[45] Information resources and services. The library is fully automated. The WML has a stock of about 22000 volumes covering not only all aspects of business and management, but also related areas such as economics, accounting, finance, the behavioral sciences and information technology.

Hostels

IMI, New Delhi provides hostel facilities both inside and outside the campus. The modern residence at IMI, New Delhi forms an integral part of the academic and social life. Besides promoting group study and learning outside the classroom, the residential accommodation also enables participants to optimally utilise IMI resources like the library and computing facilities with internet and intranet available in all the hostel rooms. The residence provides students with excellent mess facilities, well-furnished rooms and recreational facilities including a modern air-conditioned gymnasium and sports facilities.[46][47]

Student Life

Student Council

The mission of the Student Council of IMI New Delhi is to nurture and enhance the reputation of the Institute within the student fraternity, corporate world and society in general. The Student Council is a democratic body.[48] All its representatives are elected by students of IMI New Delhi. Presently, the council consists of five members each with a distinct position of responsibility : General Secretary, Joint Secretary, Event Secretary, PGDM Course Representative and PGDHRM Course Representative.[49] Secretaries of all clubs and committees of IMI New Delhi are executive members of the Student Council. The council acts as an interface between the management and students. The council manages and organizes Conventus, the signature annual management conclave of IMI New Delhi. The council acts as a single point of contact of students of IMI New Delhi with external agencies interested in connecting with the student community.

Committees & Clubs

There are several student-run clubs and committees in IMI, New Delhi.[50] The Student Council acts as an overarching body that ensures coordination and cooperation of all the clubs and committees of the institute.

Corporate Relations Committee

The Corporate Relations committee[51] at IMI, New Delhi is a student driven body which is responsible for building and strengthening corporate relations with organizations. It facilitates the recruitment process for the students which include Summer Internship, Laterals and Final Placement Process. It organizes Business Thought Leadership (BTL) Series wherein Corporate Leaders are invited to address the students and enlighten them with their enriching industry experience.

Alumni Relations Committee

The Alumni Relations Committee[52] is responsible for strengthening the bond between IMI, New Delhi and its alumni to establish a mutually beneficial relationship. It works to update the school’s alumni database and in keeping the alumni updated with the happenings in the school. Apart from inviting the alumni for the summer and final placement processes, the committee also organizes its flagship event, the National Annual Alumni Meet and regular chapter meets in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Dubai.

Branding & Media Relations Committee

The Branding and Media Relations Committee[53] works on various verticals like admissions and media coverage. The committee communicates and brands through various tools like blogs (life@imi), twitter[54] handles, Facebook[55] pages among others. The committee members master in content writing, design tools, website management, blogging, public speaking, vendor management, emceeing and event handling amongst many other specials; the committee delivers the power of imagination at IMI, New Delhi.

The Marketing Club

The Marketing Club[56] enhances the overall development of member students by facilitating the development of skills such as event organization, pitching to the corporate and content writing. It organizes the event, ‘Excalibur’, a National level case study competition, during ‘Kritva’, the Annual Management and Cultural Fest of IMI, New Delhi, amongst other events.

The Finance Club

The Finance Club’s[57] activities explore the various verticals within finance including stock markets, investments, equity research, financial policies etc. In terms of the specific activities, the club conducts workshops and speaker sessions wherein the students get an opportunity to interact with the industry experts and stalwarts of the corporate sector.

The Operations Club

The Operations Club[58] is the student initiative to promote the fields of Operations, Supply Chain, Operations Research and Manufacturing Studies and activities allied to these areas. The Operations Club is renowned for its area professors, creativity, dynamism and intellectual content. ‘Ranneeti’, the Operations Club’s flagship online strategy warfare event at IMI, New Delhi’s annual cultural event ‘Kritva’, is one of the most keenly followed events in the college.

The Human Resources Club

The Human Resource Club[59] at International Management Institute, New Delhi, works in the field of Human Resource Management and organizes several events throughout the year. In association with the Alumni Relations Committee, it organizes ‘SIP Coffee’, which is an interaction wherein, the alumni are invited to provide valuable insights about the various new facets of HR functions.

The IMAC Club

IMAC[60] is one of the functional clubs of IMI, New Delhi which focuses on Information Management, Analytics, Mobility and Consulting. It started in year 2014 and has an objective to make students aware of the rapid changes and innovations taking place in the field of information technology and analyse how such developments can be leveraged in the corporate world effectively.

Culsec - The Cultural Club

The Cultural Club[61] organizes cultural events. The Annual Management and Cultural festival of IMI, New Delhi – Kritva is the flagship event of the Cultural Club. Apart from this, the club organises festivals like Lohri, Holi, Independence Day, Republic Day, etc.

The Entrepreneurship Cell

The E-Cell[62] is the student-run Entrepreneurship Cell of IMI, New Delhi which aims at fostering the entrepreneurial spirit among the young students, by exposing them to the challenges of starting a new venture. It conducts various workshops, speaker sessions and other events for aspiring entrepreneurs.

The Economics and Strategy Club

The Economics and Strategy club[63] of IMI, New Delhi aims at increasing knowledge, fostering understanding and stimulating interest in the complex and interesting field of economics and strategy. It holds seminars and workshops on topics of current interest and their implications on business. It typically invites top economists in the country from the government, think tanks, and financial institutions for conducting the same.

Jagriti

The Jagriti Club[64] conducts events such as Soothing Souls - A Blanket Distribution Drive for the underprivileged, Blood Donation drives, Joy of Giving Week - dedicated to the donation of clothes and shoes to the poor, NGO Visits - organised once every trimester, Sapling and Tree Plantation Drives- A green initiative for a healthier environment, Night Walks - To sensitise people towards the harsh realities of life.

Diversity Club

The Diversity Club[65] aims to incorporate diversity in terms of culture and performing arts in every initiative that it takes up. Its mission is to enhance social interaction outside the classroom, in order to facilitate an informal dialogue that will help build relationships.

Sports Club

The Sports Club[66] works towards providing a healthy and rejuvenating environment to the students by organizing various sports events. It also tries to imbibe social responsibility by organizing social events with the help of other concerned clubs and non-profit organizations. It organizes events like ‘Spardha’, the annual intra-college sports fest, ‘SANGAM’, the mini marathon, ‘Volleyball Premier League’ and ‘Table Tennis Grand Prix’.

International Relations Committee

The International Relations Committee[67] is the face of IMI, New Delhi for the International Exchange Program. The committee works towards building new collaborations and fostering new tie-ups with universities and institutes around the world. It liaises with the student exchange committees of all the partner institutes to keep track of various developments. The objective is to keep all the students of IMI, New Delhi informed about the various courses being offered in the partner institutes. The committee also takes the responsibility of providing the outbound students with all the required information regarding their accommodation and scholarships abroad.

Residential Affairs Council

The Residential Affairs Council or RAC,[68] as it is popularly known, helps address students’ grievances and voice them to the Management. It works towards arranging special meals for festivals, various celebrations and also frequently revising the Menu Card in the regular course.

Campus Events

The events at institute include Conventus, the annual management conclave organized in the month of August[69] and Kritva, an annual cultural festival held in the month of October with pan-India participation from all the top B-schools of the country.[70][71][72]

Conventus

Conventus is an yearly conclave that acts as a converging point of industry experts across business disciplines and management leaders of India. The event provides a platform for the academicians, industry leaders and students to share and discuss on themes of imminent relevance to the corporate world. The event includes various summits in the fields of finance, marketing, operations, HR, economics, information management and entrepreneurship held in three consecutive days. The theme for Conventus' 14 was based on "Sustenance and Growth in VUCA times - The road ahead for Corporate India". The event was inaugurated by Mr. S. Y. Siddiqui, Chief Mentor, Maruti Suzuki, India.[73]

Kritva

Kritva is the annual cultural festival of IMI New Delhi. It is the ultimate carnival that showcases the talent versatility of the student community. The 72-hour fest has a plethora of events in both cultural and management forms ranging from case study presentations to fashion shows, management quizzes to street plays, strategy games to Indian Classical Dance. It is one of the most participated B-school events in north India. The theme for Kritva '14 was "Redefining India". Kritva'14 witnessed a footfall of around 3500-4000 participants.[74]

Alumni

IMI alumni have gone into business and academia as well as in governmental and non-governmental organizations. A number of alumni are in varied industry segments, while others are in public service including a few members of Indian Parliament. IMI alumni are also in academia including in Ivy League colleges in the US. The IMI Alumni Association is called Achievers and it has regional chapters in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Admission and Placements

Admissions for IMI, New Delhi are conducted through Common Admission Test (CAT). The Institute also accepts GMAT scores for Foreign Students and Non-Resident Indian Students.[75] Apart from the test scores, candidates are also evaluated in past academic performances in graduation, class XII & X, extempore speaking, psychometric test, essay writing and personal interview, besides other qualitative parameters for admission shortlists.[76] The occasion of the Inauguration Ceremony for PGDM 2014 was graced by Mr.Manoj Kohli. IMI, New Delhi usually holds its final placement process between the months of November and January. Summer internship placement processes are conducted from September onwards.
