It is located in the North Karelia region, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of Joensuu. The municipality has a population of Template:Infobox Finnish municipality/population count (Error: Invalid time.)[1] and covers an area of [convert: invalid number] of which [convert: invalid number] is water.[2] The population density is [convert: invalid number].

The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The municipality has previously also been known as "Kontiolax" in Swedish documents, but is today referred to as "Kontiolahti" also in Swedish.[3]

Kontiolahti hosted the Biathlon World Championships in 1990, 1999 and 2015.[4]
