This is a list of characters in the Hunger Games trilogy, a series of young adult science fiction novels by Suzanne Collins.

Main characters

Katniss Everdeen

Main article: Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is the 16-year-old protagonist of the series. Normally quiet, she lives with her mother and her younger sister Primrose in one of the poorest district of Panem, District 12, which is in charge of mining coal for the Capitol. Her looks are typical for someone from the Seam (the slums of District 12): long black hair, which she wears in a single braid down her back; olive skin; and gray eyes. Five years before Katniss became a tribute in The Hunger Games, her father was killed in a mining explosion, and her mother fell into a depression. She does not start trusting her mother again till Catching Fire. In order to provide for her family, Katniss began to hunt in the woods, just as her father had taught her. In the process, she becomes hunting partners and friends with Gale Hawthorne.

When it comes time to draw the tributes for the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss' sister Prim's name is drawn, but Katniss volunteers to take her sister's place. When she is introduced to the Capitol along with the other tributes, her dress is "set on fire" by her stylist Cinna. This gives her the nickname "The Girl On Fire", which is used recurrently during the trilogy. During the Games, Peeta expresses his love for her on live television, which Katniss assumes is a ploy to gain attention from rich sponsors. Later, as they grow closer to each other, it appears that his love is genuine, though she is confused about her own feelings. Halfway through the Games, a new rule is instituted so that both tributes from a District can become winners, causing Peeta and Katniss to work together. However, when only Peeta and Katniss are left, the rule is reversed, in an attempt to force one of them to kill the other, which will ensure a more dramatic ending. At that time, Katniss decides that both of them should eat poisonous berries called nightlock, killing themselves, and ensuring the Hunger Games have no winner, seen by the audience as an act of undying love. As a result, Seneca Crane hastily ends the Games, and both Katniss and Peeta are declared winners, which humiliates the Capitol. This choice makes Katniss a symbol of rebellion for all of the Districts.

In the second book, Catching Fire, Katniss becomes aware of her conflicting feelings for both Gale and Peeta. Peeta and Katniss compete with each other in the 3rd Quarter Quell, or the 75th Hunger Games, in which Katniss and several other tributes escape from the arena, while Peeta is captured by the Capitol. Katniss is taken by the rebels to District 13.

In Mockingjay, Katniss helps to end the war, but her sister is killed, Katniss is left burned in a bombing near the President's mansion, believed to be set off by the Capitol, right before the end of the war. After a talk with President Snow, she realizes that it was President Coin of District 13 and the new president of Panem, who ordered the bombing. Instead of executing President Snow, as had been decided, she kills Coin to avenge Prim's death and prevent someone as brutal as Snow taking his place. After being exonerated for Coin's death, Katniss is sent back to District 12. In the epilogue, set fifteen years after the end of the story, it is implied that she has married Peeta, and they have two children, one girl and one boy. In Catching Fire, It is said that her favorite color is green.

Collins has said that Katniss "is a futuristic Theseus." Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence portrays Katniss Everdeen in the movie, released March 23, 2012.

Peeta Mellark

Peeta Mellark is the male tribute from District 12 in the 74th and 75th Hunger Games. He is a baker's son, very shy but confident, and he states in an interview after the Reaping that he has been in love with Katniss since the first day he saw her. His relationship with Katniss grows throughout the novels.

During The Hunger Games, Peeta is certain that Katniss will win because of her experience in hunting. Peeta defends Katniss and even declares his love for her on public television. Though Peeta is sincere, Katniss does not truly return Peeta's affections; she initially believes he is simply trying to curry favor with the public and with the sponsors, and she still has strong feelings for Gale. They are the last two tributes left at the end of the Games, but rather than fight to the death, Peeta and Katniss attempt suicide, forcing the Gamemakers to declare both of them the victors. It was later revealed that Peeta had gotten blood poisioning from a wound received during the games. He had to have surgery, but the damage and poisioning resulted in the loss of his left leg.

Catching Fire opens with Peeta "icy" and "unreachable", believing that the affections Katniss showed him during the previous year's Games were a ploy. When President Snow announces the Third Quarter Quell, Peeta makes a deal with Haymitch to keep Katniss alive and safe - he will volunteer himself in Haymitch's place in order to protect Katniss, despite his intention to save Katniss's life by sacrificing himself. He lies to the Capitol in an effort to try and save Katniss from the Hunger Games by saying untruthfully that they are married and that she is pregnant. During the third Quarter Quell, Peeta and Katniss are part of the group that destroys the arena. While rebels from District 13 rescue Katniss, Peeta is captured by Capitol forces. Katniss finds herself willing to kill him to save him from the tortures there.

In Mockingjay, he is tortured physically and mentally in an attempt to "break" Katniss because of her love for him. Although he and others are eventually rescued, the Capitol had tampered with his memories by using tracker jacker venom - a process called "hijacking" - which leaves him frightened and unstable. Believing that Katniss is a muttation, and remembering only a twisted version of their experiences in the Games, Peeta attempts to kill Katniss. With help from District 13 doctors and friends, he slowly begins to regain parts of his real memories, although the process is overwhelming and tedious for him. President Coin sends him on the final mission into the Capitol with the squad of soldiers that includes Katniss, Gale, and Finnick, where he struggles with his memories and mental trauma. It is believed President Coin's intention was for Peeta to become insane and kill Katniss, making her into a martyr. However, Peeta manages to prevent this from happening, even insisting that he be handcuffed constantly in case he loses control and hurts someone. Realizing the danger in which he puts the group and the difficulty he causes them, he asks to be killed when it seems that he will lose control and try to kill Katniss. Katniss fiercely refuses and kisses him, which seems to make him stable. Peeta later votes not to have a Hunger Games featuring Capitol children. When the war ends, Peeta survives and eventually returns to District 12 with Katniss. Later he and Katniss marry, and have two children - a boy (younger) and a girl (older) - who are able to live in a world without the Hunger Games.

Peeta's actual age or birthdate are never given, but it is assumed that he is the same age as Katniss, because he was in her grade when he first heard her sing. His favorite color is orange like the sunset.

He is played by actor Josh Hutcherson in the 2012 movie.

Gale Hawthorne

Gale is an 18 year old who lives in District 12. He is Katniss's best friend and her hunting partner. They met when Katniss was trying to hunt for her family (about 6 months after her father was killed in a mining accident) and when she killed an animal, Gale accused her of stealing from his trap. Once the two had talked, they bonded over the fact that their fathers had both been killed in the same accident and that, as the eldest siblings, they were responsible for their families.

In the 2nd book, Catching Fire, Katniss returns to District 12, but their relationship can no longer be the same since Katniss and Peeta must play the part of lovers due to the Capitol's threats. Gale confesses his love for Katniss after she asks him to run away with her but soon after is whipped in front of the crowd for hunting on Capitol land. He and Katniss prepare to fight as it becomes clear that a rebellion is about to begin; however, Katniss (along with Peeta) are selected for the Quarter Quell and must leave District 12 to return to the Hunger Games. Gale is forced to say goodbye and watch his best friend fight against odds to survive death on live television.

In Mockingjay, Gale finds himself fighting with the rebellion in an epic war. Although Katniss is safe with him, their home, District 12, is destroyed. Toward the the end of the book, his relationship with her deteriorates because he feels responsible, insisting that he would always remind Katniss of Prim's death. Although Katniss does eventually forgive him, Gale decides to remain in District 2 "probably kissing another pair of lips".

Gale is portrayed by Liam Hemsworth in the 2012 film.

Haymitch Abernathy is a "paunchy, middle-aged man" who was the victor of the 50th Hunger Games, which occurred 24 years before the beginning of the first book. When he was 16, Haymitch was Reaped for the second Quarter Quell, where four tributes from each district were forced into the arena. He became an ally to a girl named Maysilee Donner, who was the original owner of the mockingjay pin, but later was forced to watch her die. Katniss finds this to be akin to what happened between her and Rue. During the Games, he found his way past a wall of shrubbery to the edge of the arena, where a force field caused anything that hit it to be flung back. When the Games came down to himself (who had been eviscerated) and a female tribute, he positioned himself by the edge so that when the girl threw her weapon at him, the force field sent it back at her, killing her and leaving Haymitch the victor. Within two weeks of his victory, Haymitch's mother, younger brother, and girlfriend were killed by President Snow, as punishment for Haymitch using the force field to his advantage. Since President Snow had left no one close to Haymitch to use to control him, Haymitch instead is "held up as an example" of what happens to those who defy the Capitol.

After winning his games, he became an alcoholic and has spent almost all of the next 24 years intoxicated to the point of embarrassment. Being the only surviving Hunger Games champion from District 12 (one of only two in the history of the games), Haymitch was forced to mentor all of its tributes, which consumed him with guilt by being forced to participate in the games that he hated. He dealt with these feelings by being drunk and openly flouting the dignity of the games. He treats Peeta and Katniss with contempt, and is sarcastic, expending no effort to help them. However, when Katniss confronts him, he is stirred from his stupor and emerges as the pair's greatest advocate and shows himself to be highly canny as he guides his protégés in a cleverly designed, highly unorthodox strategy aimed at ensuring the survival of both tributes.

Although she disliked him greatly at first due to his drinking and his harshness, Katniss later realizes that he is tired of seeing children placed under his care for the Games only to die, and also sees that he cares a lot about Peeta and Katniss. After being in the arena, she realizes that drinking was his form of escape from the nightmares caused by his experiences as a tribute. In the book Catching Fire, it is said that the liquor supply in District 12 has run out, and Haymitch has gone insane, shaking violently and having visions that only he can see (i.e. having delirium tremens). It is left up to Katniss and Peeta to coax him back to health (and get him more liquor). After this incident, Katniss begins to develop a true affection and respect for him. Katniss also realizes that she and Haymitch both think alike, since she was well able to understand what he was trying to communicate to her through the gifts that he sent her in the arena. When Katniss finds out that Haymitch didn't save Peeta at the 75th Hunger Games arena, she claws him and feels that he betrayed her. In Mockingjay, Haymitch is forced to go through detox in District 13 since they do not permit the consumption of alcohol. Despite this, he continues to serve as a mentor to Katniss and Peeta.

In the 2012 film, Haymitch is played by Woody Harrelson.

Primrose Everdeen, nicknamed "Prim", is Katniss's younger sister. She was 12 years old in The Hunger Games and 13 in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Like her mother, she has blonde hair and blue eyes.

At the Reaping for the 74th Hunger Games, her name is pulled by Effie Trinket. Her older sister Katniss volunteers to take her place. As she leaves for the Capitol, Prim receives a promise from Katniss that she will do all that she can to win the Hunger Games. This promise guides many of Katniss's actions in the game.

In The Hunger Games, Prim is thoughtful, sweet, and somewhat delicate in spite of all she has been put through at a young age. She is a skilled healer, having been taught by her mother. In Mockingjay, Prim is singled out by District 13 to be trained as a doctor. During Catching Fire and Mockingjay, Katniss sees a change in her personality, as she has become more solemn and mature. Katniss once said that Prim is "the only person I'm certain I love."

In Mockingjay, Prim is sent into the battle for The Capitol to serve as a Casualty Aide by President Coin. During this battle, Prim is killed in a bombing, causing Katniss to go into a deep depression. President Snow later reveals to Katniss that the bombing was caused by the rebels to galvanize public opinion against the Capitol by making people think that the Capitol caused a bombing, then timed things so that a second series of explosions would detonate when the medical corps arrived to help survivors. Katniss already knew from Gale that this was a strategy being contemplated by the rebels. This information prompts Katniss to execute President Coin instead of Snow.

Publishers Weekly was pleased with the fact that Prim's character expanded in Mockingjay and readers were able to know her better.

President Coriolanus Snow

The main antagonist of the series, President Snow is the autocratic ruler of the Capitol and all of Panem. Though seemingly laid-back, his demeanor hides a sadistic and psychopathic mind. He initially appears in The Hunger Games when he crowns Katniss and Peeta as victors, but he does not speak to Katniss face-to-face until Catching Fire, when he pays her a visit at home and tells her that he is angry that both she and Peeta were allowed to survive the Hunger Games, as their act of defiance (preferring joint suicide to the prospect of one killing the other) has ignited rebellion in several of the Districts. She is too prominent to kill, but he threatens her family and Gale unless she proves to the Districts that her act of saving Peeta was merely that of a love-crazed teenager and was not related to any desire to defy the Capitol. Later, Snow indicates to her that she failed in this, meaning that some or all of his threats will come true. President Snow is described as having very puffy lips, which are most likely the result of an appearance-altering operation that is very popular in the Capitol. Katniss describes him as exuding a smell of blood and roses. In Mockingjay, it is revealed that the smell of blood is due to mouth sores he got from one of the poisons that he used to kill people in his monomaniacal efforts to control Panem. He drank the poison in order to allay suspicions, then took the antidote, but they could not cure him of the sores. He also smells strongly of genetically enhanced roses, as he always wears a white rose in his lapel to cover the scent of blood. The strong smell invariably makes Katniss gag. He is said to have prostituted winning tributes, like Finnick Odair, forcing them to have sex with wealthy Capitol denizens, under threat of killing their loved ones if they refused. Snow claims he only kills for a purpose, and he promises Katniss he will always tell her the truth. Whether these assertions are true or not is left up to interpretation by Katniss. He dies at the end of Mockingjay, before Katniss can carry out his sentence, though the rebels are unable to determine whether it was by choking to death on his own blood from his untreated mouth sores or because he was trampled by the crowd in the panic following the assassination of President Coin.

This is a list of the major tributes that affected the plot or characters from either the 74th Hunger Games and the 75th Hunger Games, also known as the third Quarter Quell.

District 1

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Marvel - His name is unknown to Katniss until the Victory Tour in the second book; throughout The Hunger Games he is simply known as "the boy from District 1". In the top 8 he kills Rue when he stabs her with a spear in her abdomen, and Katniss shoots an arrow through his neck in retaliation. He is a Career. In the film, Marvel is portrayed by Jack Quaid.

• Glimmer - As a Career tribute, she teams up with Cato, Clove, Marvel, and the tributes from District 4. She is from District 1, which specializes in making luxury items for the Capitol. She is described as very beautiful, being tall with long blond hair and emerald green eyes. She dies, along with the girl from District 4, when Katniss drops a tracker jacker nest on the Career alliance. Afterwards, Katniss retrieves her bow and arrows. In the film, Glimmer is portrayed by Leven Rambin.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Gloss — Brother of Cashmere. He kills Wiress by slitting her throat, and Katniss retaliates by sending an arrow into his temple.

• Cashmere - Sister of Gloss. She and her brother won back-to-back Games which were fairly recent because Katniss remembers watching them. She is described as being classically beautiful with long blond curls. Johanna kills her with an axe when she, Gloss, Brutus, and Enobaria attack Katniss and Peeta's group at the Cornucopia. It is also implied that she, like Finnick, was forced to prostitute herself to powerful members of the Capitol with whom the Gamemakers wanted to curry favor.

District 2

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Cato - Katniss considers Cato to be her and Peeta's most fearsome opponent because of his size and strength, skill with many weapons, and savage pleasure in killing. Like most Careers, Cato has complete confidence in his abilities and expects that he will be the victor. Katniss believes he is not completely sane after seeing his reaction to the destruction of the Careers' food supply. He is the last tribute to die. During the finale of the Games, he is pushed off the Cornucopia to the wolf muttations—fearsome creatures created in the Capitol—who prolong his death to the point that, when Katniss finally shoots him, he is nothing more than a gnawed and bloody hunk of meat. In the film, Alexander Ludwig portrays Cato.

• Clove — She is arrogant, strong, and can use many weapons, especially knives, and she is known to never miss her target. She makes the first kill of the 74th Hunger Games by knifing the boy from district 9 in the back while he is fighting with Katniss over a backpack. Her next target is Katniss but her knife is blocked by Katniss's newly acquired backpack when she raises it over her head. She has a special hatred of Katniss because of her high training score. Katniss attempts to kill her with the tracker jacker nest. Like Cato, she enjoys killing, as evidenced when she pins Katniss to the ground at the Feast and plans to give her the most torturous death possible. Before she can continue to cut Katniss, Thresh catches her and dents her skull with a rock, which kills her. In the film, Isabelle Fuhrman portrays Clove.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Brutus — Described by Katniss as being in his 40s, he volunteers for the Quarter Quell and "can't wait to get back in the arena". He is killed by Peeta after killing Chaff. He is the last tribute to die, similar to Cato in the previous Hunger Games.

• Enobaria — The victor of the 62nd hunger games, she is part of the Career alliance in the arena, along with Brutus, Cashmere, and Gloss. She won her original Hunger Games by slicing through her opponents' neck with her teeth. After she won, the Capitol surgically altered her teeth to be pointy and sharp. She is also one of the six survivors of the 75th Games, and is taken to the Capitol along with Peeta and Johanna. At the end of Mockingjay, she is one of the only Victors to survive the Quarter Quell and the war with the Capitol, along with Peeta, Annie, Johanna, Haymitch, Katniss, and Beetee.

District 3

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - The male tribute's name is unknown to Katniss. He is able to rearrange and reactivate the land mines at the start of the Games to protect the food the Careers have gathered, resulting in them allying with him despite his not being a Career Tribute. Katniss manages to blow up the food with his mines, and Cato kills him for it by snapping his neck. In the film, he is portrayed by Ian Nelson.

• Female tribute - The female tribute's name is unknown to Katniss. She died on the first day, most likely during the Bloodbath at the Cornucopia. In the film, she is portrayed by Kalia Prescott.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Beetee — He is described as an older man with dark hair, pale skin and glasses. He is an incredibly smart inventor and can effectively use wire as a weapon, usually in combination with electricity. He is crucial to the plans of the Rebels to rescue the Tributes in the Quarter Quell, having devised a method of short circuiting the force field surrounding the Arena. He is nicknamed "Volts" by Johanna Mason. In Mockingjay he is one of the scientists who works in District 13. He creates Katniss's bow and arrows for her "Mockingjay" costume and helps Gale develop bombs, one of which is likely the bomb used in the bombing that killed many Capitol children and rebel casualty aides (including Prim). He is part of the committee that gathers at the end of the book to vote whether or not to hold a final Hunger Games (he votes against the idea).

• Wiress — She is the same age as Katniss' mother (so is most likely between her late thirties and mid-forties) and has dark hair and pale skin. She often does not finish her sentences; Beetee sometimes finishes them for her. Although she is an inventor like Beetee, her genius manifests itself in different ways. She is very intuitive and figures out the arena works like a clock before anyone else does. She is nicknamed "Nuts" by Johanna Mason. She is killed by Gloss when he slits her throat.

District 4

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - He died in the Bloodbath, on the first day, in the Cornucopia. He is called "unfortunate" by Katniss, since all of the Careers usually make it through the initial Bloodbath at the Cornucopia. He is not part of the Careers in the film, leading to him to hide in the Cornucopia before being killed by Cato after an attempt to flee. He is portrayed by Ethan Jamieson.

• Female tribute. She was killed when Katniss dropped the tracker jacker nest on the careers. In the film, she is not a part of the careers and is killed during the bloodbath. She is portrayed by Tara Macken.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Finnick Odair — Finnick is 24 years old and described as being very handsome and tall with tan skin, bronze hair, and stunning sea-green eyes, making him very popular with people in the Capitol. He is known for having many lovers in the Capitol, none of whom he stays with for long. At age 14, he won his first Hunger Games by using a trident and a net against other tributes; District 4's trade is fishing. Katniss remarks that a trident given to him by a sponsor may have been the most expensive gift ever seen in the games. During the Quarter Quell, Katniss is hesitant to make Finnick her ally, because she does not trust him—he seems to her to be shallow, arrogant, and superficial—and does not want to become close to him and then have to kill him, but he proves to be a valuable and trustworthy ally, saving Peeta using CPR and using his district skills to provide shelter. When jabberjays that make sounds of the screams of loved ones being tortured appear in the Quell, the one made to target Finnick uses the voice of Annie Cresta, his "poor, mad" lover back home, who won her own Games a few years before, but went insane after seeing her district partner decapitated, and after being forced to prostitute herself to the wealthy and powerful in the Capitol. In Mockingjay, Finnick enters a deep depression as a result of Annie's being held prisoner in the Capitol. He helps the rebellion by appearing in rebel propos and revealing the fact that victors are routinely prostituted to wealthy citizens of the Capitol by President Snow, which is why he was seen as having a string of lovers. He then reveals all of the political secrets he learned from clients, including that President Snow owes his position to having poisoned his opponents. He is reunited with Annie (when District 13 retrieves her, Johanna, and Peeta from the Capitol), and they get married. Finnick is a member of the "Star Squad" that goes to fight in the Capitol during the final stages of the rebellion. He is decapitated by lizard muttations during the attempt to infiltrate the Capitol. Some months after his death, Annie has their son. Finnick is characterized as being personable and down-to earth, with a quirky sense of humor. After an initial period of distrust, he and Katniss become good friends.

• Mags - She is 80 years old and volunteers to take the place of Finnick's lover, Annie Cresta, to spare her. She was Finnick's mentor when he competed in the 65th Hunger Games. Along with Wiress and Beetee, Mags is one of the first people Katniss wants for an ally, because her selflessness reminds her of when she volunteered for Prim. She speaks in garbled words that Katniss can't understand. Katniss observes that she can make a fishing hook out of anything. When the group is trying to escape poisonous fog, Mags kisses Finnick, then kills herself without hesitation because Finnick becomes distraught because he cannot rescue both Mags and Peeta. Her death causes Finnick to cry. Katniss is confused by this act and Finnick's distress, until she learns near the end of the book that Mags was Finnick's mentor and was like family to him from Johanna.

District 5

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - The male tribute dies in the initial bloodbath at the Cornucopia. In the film, he is portrayed by Chris Mark.

• "Foxface" — Katniss gives the female tribute the nickname "Foxface" after seeing her on TV when they announce the contestants of the Hunger Games, describing her as "a girl that looks like a fox" because of her red hair and thin face. Her real name is never revealed. Clever and evasive, she uses ingenious strategies, such as hiding in the Cornucopia at the Feast, in order to survive. She avoids contact with other tributes, but relies on them for food; she steals just enough food to survive, but not enough to arouse suspicion that any food is missing. She dies after surreptitiously stealing some of Peeta's food, which happened to be a type of poisonous berry called Nightlock. Katniss believes her to have been the smartest of all the tributes, and later remarks that "If, in fact, we had been setting a trap for her, she'd have sensed it and avoided the berries." She is the fifth person left with Thresh,Cato, Peeta, and Katniss. In the film, Jacqueline Emerson portrays Foxface.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - He is killed by Finnick at the bloodbath and is said to have thrown-up on the sword fighting station in the training center.

• Female tribute— She is killed on the second day by either the tidal wave between ten o'clock and eleven o'clock or the unknown trap between six o'clock and seven o'clock.

District 6

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Male tribute- Dies in the bloodbath in the Cornucopia on the first day. In the film, he and Cato get into an argument at the Training Center, with Cato believing the boy stole his knife, however Rue is shown with Cato's knife in the rafters. He is then killed by Cato during the bloodbath. He is portrayed by Ashton Moio in the film.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Male Morphling - Katniss refers to him, then she dies in a ball of fire in the 7 book of the series called catching death along with his female partner, as "the morphlings" because of their addiction to painkiller. Just as Haymitch turned to alcohol, the District 6 tributes turned to morphling in an attempt to block out the horrors they witnessed in the arena and the abuse they suffered afterwards. He and his fellow tribute were said to be glued to the camouflage station during training and loved to paint in swirling patterns. They also paint flowers on Peeta and Katniss' faces. He is killed at the Cornucopia, possibly by one of the Careers.

• Female Morphling - Katniss refers to her, along with her male partner, as "the morphlings" because of their addiction to the painkiller. Her favorite thing to paint is flowers, which she paints all over herself in the Training Center. She sacrifices her life to save Peeta from the monkey muttations. It is later revealed that she was part of the alliance protecting Katniss and Peeta. In her last minutes, she uses her own blood to paint a flower on Peeta's face. Katniss and Peeta are by her side as she bleeds to death. Peeta, as she dies, talks to her about his love of.

District 7

• Blight — He is killed when he runs into the force field while he, Johanna, Beetee, and Wiress are trying to escape from the blood-rain section of the arena.He's also Johanna's partner.

• Johanna Mason — Sarcastic and mean-spirited, Johanna's first meeting with Katniss involves her stripping out of her tree costume in order to make Katniss uncomfortable. She reveals that she has no friends or family in District 7, stating "there is no one left I care about." She won her original Hunger Games by pretending she was a weakling and a coward, so no one regarded her as a threat, but when only a few tributes remained, she revealed herself as a vicious killer. Johanna teams up with Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick in the Quarter Quell, bringing Beetee and Wiress with her. Katniss describes her presence as being akin to having an older sister who hates you. Johanna takes part in the committee to keep Katniss and Peeta alive, and helps by protecting Katniss throughout the Games. Near the end of Catching Fire she removes the tracker in Katniss' arm by cutting it out with a knife. Johanna is captured by the Capitol at the end of Catching Fire. In the third book, she is rescued along with Peeta and Annie and brought to District 13, where she fights with rebel forces and improves her friendship with Katniss. She is to fight in the Capitol with Katniss (although not as a sharpshooter—being from an area where lumber is the main export, her main weapon is the axe) but during training in District 13 she panics when the training arena is deliberately flooded. Katniss later learns Johanna has a fear of water, which developed as a result of her Capitol torture: being soaked in water and given electric shocks. Because she and Katniss refuse to be held in the District 13 hospital to treat their supposed mental illnesses, they convince the officials of District 13 to let them room together. Johanna is part of the committee that votes whether or not to hold one last Hunger Games using the Capitol's children: she votes yes.

District 8

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - Dies in the bloodbath the first day in the Cornucopia. He is portrayed by Samuel Tan in the film.

• Female tribute - She is killed during the first night in the woods near Katniss. The fire she starts attracts the attention of the Careers and Peeta, who attack her. She does not die immediately, forcing Peeta to go back and kill her. In the film, she is portrayed by Mackenzie Lintz and does die immediately.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Woof — He is killed at the Cornucopia bloodbath. During training, the author implies that he may be senile. He is placed on the metal plate next to Katniss when the Games are about to begin.

• Cecelia— In Catching Fire, it is mentioned that she has three children she left in her district before the Quarter Quell. She is killed in the bloodbath at the Cornucopia on the first day. When Effie Trinket hears of Cecelia being reaped again she says, "Oh no, not Cecelia."

District 9

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - He is killed the first day when Clove throws a knife in his back at the Cornucopia while he is fighting with Katniss over a backpack. Upon retrieval of the backpack, Katniss uses it to block the knife Clove throws at her. The knife sticks in the backpack, which gives Katniss a weapon. He is portrayed by Imanol Yepez-Frias in the film.

• Female tribute- Dies in the bloodbath the first day in the Cornucopia. She is portrayed by Dakota Hood in the film.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Male tribute - Killed on the second day by either the tidal wave between ten o'clock and eleven o'clock or the unknown trap between six o'clock and seven o'clock.

• Female tribute - Dies in the bloodbath the first day in the Cornucopia.

District 11

In the 74th Hunger Games

• Thresh — He has the same dark brown skin and golden brown eyes as Rue, but is not otherwise similar in appearance. Katniss refers to him as a "physical wonder" as he stands easily over six feet tall and is very well-built, possessing "muscles like an ox" which give him immense strength. Thresh is quiet and solitary, answering with single words during his interview with Caesar Flickerman. During training, the Careers, recognizing his strength, invite him to join their alliance during the Games but he turns them down. He receives a ten in training, tying him with Cato and giving him the joint second highest score after Katniss. It is unlikely that Thresh participated in the bloodbath at the Cornucopia; later it is disclosed that he found a wheat field in which he stayed for the majority of the games. No one wanted to go into the tall grass after him so he was left alone. At the Feast, he overhears Clove taunting Katniss that she and Marvel killed his District partner, Rue. Enraged, he grabs Clove just as she is about to torture Katniss and kills her by smashing her skull with a rock. He lets Katniss live after she explains that she was allied with Rue and sang to her as she died and decorated her corpse with flowers. Thresh then leaves, taking his pack and the District 2 pack to ensure Cato will chase after him and not Katniss. In the book, Thresh, in fifth place, is killed two days later by Cato. In the movie, he was killed killed fourth last by the wolf muttations. Dayo Okeniyi portrays Thresh in the film.

• Rue — She and Katniss become allies. She is 12 years old, with dark brown hair and skin, and "golden brown" eyes. She is similar in size and demeanor to Katniss' sister Prim, which is a major factor in Katniss' decision to team up with her. She is the oldest of six children and worked in the orchards for her district, which specializes in agriculture. She excels at tree climbing and can also leap from tree to tree with relative ease, a skill which earns her a seven from the Gamemakers in training. Her love of music inspires her to teach Katniss the simple four note melody that she used to signal quitting time in the orchards back home. Katniss and Rue use this melody as a signal call to each other to let them know they're both safe, since the Mockingjays repeat the tune when they hear it. Rue also brings attention to Katniss's mockingjay pin— the pin is what led Rue to trust Katniss, because of the mockingjay's symbolic significance as a protest against the Capitol. Katniss tries to give Rue the pin, but Rue tells her to keep it. While Rue is acting as a decoy and Katniss is destroying the Careers' food, Rue runs into trouble with the boy tribute from District 1, Marvel. He spears Rue through her abdomen while she is caught in his trap, provoking Katniss to kill him with an arrow to the neck. Katniss sings a lullaby to Rue as she dies, and covers her with flowers, an unconscious act of rebellion, before letting the hovercraft retrieve her. Katniss's actions are rewarded by a gift of bread from District 11 in thanks. Rue's particularly poignant death contributes to the protests that District 11 holds during the Victory Tour. At the 75th Hunger Games, Peeta draws a picture of Rue's body decorated with flowers to send a message to the Gamemakers who are evaluating Peeta's chances at the Games. This action results in him receiving a rating of 12. Amandla Stenberg portrays Rue in the film.

In the 75th Hunger Games

• Chaff — He is known to be one of Haymitch's closest friends. Haymitch suggested him to be an ally. He lost a hand in his original Games and refuses to use a prosthetic. He is killed by Brutus, but the details are unknown. He died when Brutus and Enobaria the last standing careers attacked Peeta, Chaff, and Beetee while Katniss and Johanna were unraveling the wire that could have gotten them out of the arena. He, like Haymitch, was a drunkard. When he first met Katniss he kissed her "full on the lips." She was left slightly stunned and annoyed by his actions.

• Seeder — She is described as being around 60 and almost looks like she could be from the Seam (black hair, olive skin), except for the color of her eyes, which are brown. She is shown to be warm and friendly, as she hugs Katniss at the training center and reassures Katniss that Thresh and Rue's families are okay despite the crackdown on District 11 set off by Katniss and Peeta's words during the Victory Tour. Haymitch suggests her as a potential ally before the Games begin. She is killed on the first day of the 3rd Quarter Quell, presumably at the Cornucopia blood bath.

Other characters

In District 12

• Madge Undersee — The mayor's daughter and Katniss's friend. She and Katniss were always thrown together at school, both being solitary in nature. Madge is the one who gives Katniss her mockingjay pin, which becomes a symbol of rebellion and is featured on every book cover. Katniss later learns that the pin had belonged to Madge's aunt, Maysilee Donner, a Tribute in the 50th Hunger Games and twin to Madge's mother, who became allies with Haymitch for some time. Katniss and Madge spend more time together during the months after the Games. Katniss is at Madge's house when she first hears of the uprisings. She and her family perish in the District 12 bombings. Madge is not included in the film adaptation.

• Mrs. Everdeen — She is Katniss's mother. She was raised in town as the daughter of an apothecary, and consequently had a fairly comfortable life. She gave it all up to marry Katniss's father and move to the Seam, where she lived in impoverished and starvation-level conditions. She goes into a deep depression when Katniss's father dies in a mining accident. She does not talk for quite a while, causing Katniss to step up and be Prim's caretaker. She eventually recovers enough to set up an apothecary in District 12 - it is not until after her first Hunger Games that Katniss finally forgives her mother for not offering any support to her and Prim during her depression years. In Mockingjay she is seen working in the hospital in District 13, and following Prim's death at the end of the book, she does not return to District 12 with Katniss. Instead, she stays in District 4, working in a hospital and coping with her grief. She and Katniss maintain contact through telephone calls. She is portrayed by Paula Malcomson in the film.

• Mr. Everdeen - He was Katniss's father, before his horrific death in the mines of District 12 when Katniss was 11. Memories of him run through Katniss's mind throughout the series, with Katniss mentioning such features of him as his singing voice, his handsomeness, and the things he taught her. Peeta's father says that although he was in love with Katniss's mother, she chose to marry Katniss's father because of his lovely singing voice when he sang, "all the birds stopped to listen". She misses him terribly, and the pain of losing him almost destroyed Mrs. Everdeen.

• Delly Cartwright — A girl from District 12 whom Katniss describes as being "the friendliest person on the planet." She is Peeta's friend, and they have both shared many childhood memories together, including making "dough girls and boys" with the dough from Peeta's father's bakery and drawing animals with sidewalk chalk. She is one of the refugees in District 13, after escaping the District 12 fire bombing that kills both of her parents. Peeta lies in the first book and says that the Avox serving them in the Capitol is a "dead ringer for Delly". Also, in Mockingjay she is used to stir childhood memories in Peeta after he is rescued from the Capitol, in order to begin his recovery from the mind-control tortures inflicted upon him.

• Mayor Undersee — Madge's father. He is the mayor of District 12 and likes to buy strawberries from Katniss and Gale, despite knowing that they broke the law to pick them in the woods. He is always on the stage in front of the justice building for the drawing of the names for the Hunger Games. He dies in the bombing of District 12. Katniss finds out that District 8 is rebelling on his TV.

• Darius — A Peacekeeper in District 12. He cheerfully looks the other way at the black-market trading in District 12, even being a frequent customer at the Hob. He is turned into an Avox after he interferes with Gale's whipping, and is assigned to Katniss as an Avox before the Quarter Quell in a Capitol attempt to unhinge her. He is tortured to death in front of Peeta.

• Hazelle Hawthorne — Gale's mother. A very self-reliant woman, after her husband is killed in the same mining accident that killed Katniss's father, she takes up work doing people's laundry. After Gale is caught poaching and is publicly whipped, people stop using her services for fear of being punished for associating with her. She gets a new job cleaning Haymitch's house sometime after that. She was a good friend of Katniss's.

• Rory, Vick, and Posy Hawthorne — Gale's younger siblings. The book states that Rory is 12, Vick is ten and Posy is five. Posy was born just after the mining accident in which Gale's father died, and her favorite color is pink. In "Mockingjay", Posy says to Octavia (whose skin is dyed green in a style popular in the Capitol), "You're green. Are you sick?" Katniss says it's a fashion thing, and Octavia says "it's supposed to be pretty." By this point, Octavia is almost in tears. Then Posy responds."I think you would look pretty in any color", making Octavia feel a lot better.

• Greasy Sae — An old woman who sells soup at the Hob, with whom Katniss and Gale often trade. She started up a collection to sponsor Katniss and Peeta during the 74th Hunger Games. After District 12 is bombed, she works as a chef in District 13, although she dislikes the strict atmosphere. After the war is over, she visits Katniss' house twice a day to make sure she eats. She also has a young grandaughter, who is "in her own world."

• Buttercup - Prim's cat, that Katniss describes as "the ugliest tomcat in the world". He survives through multiple bombings, and walks all the way to Katniss's hut from District 13, where Katniss presumably takes care of him (even though they hate each other). however towards the end of the trilogy Buttercup and Katniss reconcile, becoming inseparable.

• Mr. Mellark - He is Peeta's father. Kind and soft spoken, resembling Peeta, he does not appear except when he trades with Katniss and Gale and when he visits Katniss before the 74th Hunger Games to give her cookies. It is later revealed that he grew up with Katniss's mother, Mrs. Everdeen, and even loved her. He and his wife die in the bombings of District 12.

• Mrs. Mellark - She is Peeta's mother. Very stern and strict, she only appears in the series once, when she beats Peeta, making her presumably abusive also. Peeta mentions that he likes his father more than his mother once. Katniss calls her a "witch" on several occasions, and hints that Mr. Mellark only married her because he could not have the woman that became Mrs. Everdeen. Mrs. Mellark dies in the bombings of District 12.

• Leevy - Leevy is a friend of Katniss's who gets Hazelle Hawthorne when Gale is injured in "Catching Fire". Also in "Catching Fire", she watches Rory, Vick, and Posy after Gale gets injured. She and her brother survived the District 12 bombing, as they are in District 13 in "Mockingjay".

• Cray - Head Peacekeeper of District 12. As Head Peacekeeper of District 12 Cray does not enforce many of the laws of the capitol. He is often found in the Hob, the black market of District 12, where he buys illegal alcohol and game from Gale and Katniss. Whilst lenient with the law, he is also known to abuse his position to lure starving young women into his bed in exchange for a small amount of money. Katniss claims that if she had not learned to hunt, she would have been one of those women. He gets replaced in Catching Fire by someone stricter, though it is unknown what happens to him. At this time Haymitch says to Mrs Everdeen "Who'd have ever thought we'd be sorry to see old Cray go?" recognizing that whilst Cray was a repulsive character, his leniency was beneficial to the people of District 12. The Head Peacekeeper who replaces him is Romulus Thread.

• Rooba - A butcher in District 12. Little is known about her except that Katniss and Gale sell her a deer before the events of the first book and use the money to buy Prim's goat, Lady.

• Ripper - She sells the booze in District 12. She is a one armed woman. Peeta targets her in Catching Fire, paying her not to sell alcohol to Haymitch or Katniss after she gets drunk in front of her mother. Peeta says that if she sells anything to Haymitch or Katniss, he will report her to the Peacekeepers.

• Maysilee Donner - She is Madge's aunt, She was reaped along with Haymitch and two others for the 50th Hunger Games, and temporarily became his ally. She was friends with Katniss's mother. After breaking the alliance with Haymitch, she is killed by a large number of bright, "candy-pink birds," who use their razor sharp beaks to fatally wound her in the neck. Haymitch stayed with her until she died, as Katniss stayed with Rue until she died. It is said that the mockingjay pin Madge gave Katniss belonged to her.

• Lady - Prim's goat bought by Katniss and Gale before the events of the first book. It said that in a "moment of giddiness", Katniss buys a pink ribbon and ties it around Lady's neck before giving Lady to Prim. She most likely died in the bombing in District 12.

In the Capitol

• Cinna — Katniss's stylist, responsible for her public appearance. After designing the spectacular outfits of the opening ceremony, which include igniting Katniss and Peeta's costumes with synthetic fire, he nicknames Katniss, "the girl on fire." Cinna is in his first year as a stylist for the Games, and he specifically requested he be assigned to District 12. His audacious designs immediately win over the audience in favor of the District 12 tributes. Despite (or perhaps because of) his professional interest in image, Cinna proves to be better than most at seeing through the superficial spectacle of the Games to their barbaric core, "using [her] outfits as a vehicle to express potentially dangerous ideas." He and Katniss establish an easy, comfortable relationship and he demonstrates a genuine concern for her well-being. In Catching Fire, Cinna dresses her for her interview in her wedding dress, as insisted by President Snow, but alters it so that when Katniss raises her arms at her interview, the white dress burns away to be replaced with a black dress of feathers that resembles a mockingjay, which has become the symbol of the resistance in Panem. Because of this, Cinna is savagely beaten in front of Katniss, right before she enters the arena for the Quarter Quell, which also has the effect of unnerving Katniss before the great ordeal. He is tortured to death after the arena explodes. Cinna is very different from the other inhabitants of the Capitol; he does not use surgery to alter his features, wears simple black clothes, and leaves his hair its natural dark brown color, close cropped. His only concession to the Capitol's fashion style is a slight touch of gold eyeliner that brings out the gold flecks in his eyes. Cinna is portrayed by Lenny Kravitz in the film version of The Hunger Games

• Effie Trinket — A Capitol-born chaperone who was assigned to oversee District 12's tributes in the Hunger Games, specifically Katniss and Peeta in the 74th and 75th games. She must carry out such tasks as drawing the tributes' names at the reaping and escorting them to the Capitol. At first, she detests her association with District 12 and hopes to be promoted to a better, richer district after she pays her dues for a few years. Later, Effie becomes attached to her District 12 charges, though it's unclear if this is because of their particular charms, or because of their fame and success, which reflect well upon herself, too. She does not have any moral qualms about the Hunger Games or the Capitol. Effie has bright pink hair that appears to be a wig. She seems totally oblivious to the misfortunes of District 12. She is very strict about manners and is always punctual. She does not appear to be very intelligent, and gets basic facts wrong, such as confusing how diamonds and pearls are made. In Mockingjay, it is said that she was imprisoned after Katniss's escape, but, unlike many others Katniss knew in the Capitol, she is not executed. She meets up again with Katniss before Snow's execution. Effie Trinket is portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the film version of The Hunger Games.

• Octavia, Venia, and Flavius — Katniss's prep team. They are residents of the Capitol and sport the usual radically altered appearances of Capitol residents, including orange corkscrew hair and purple lipstick (Flavius), pea green skin (Octavia), and aqua colored hair and a face etched with gold tattoos (Venia). To Katniss they are like very bright and fun pets. Katniss assumes that they are very dull-witted and care only for their appearance. They prove themselves less shallow when they begin to cry because it is unlikely that Katniss will survive the Quarter Quell, but at the request of herself and Cinna, they leave the room if they feel the need to be emotional. Katniss also learns valuable information from them by listening to them gossip about shortages of supplies, giving Katniss clues about which districts have rebelled. (For example, when they complain about how difficult it has been to get seafood recently due to the "bad weather" in District 4, Katniss immediately guesses that District 4 must be rebelling.) In Mockingjay, they are kidnapped and taken to District 13 to help with Katniss's style, and they very quickly run afoul of District 13's draconian rules and end up cruelly punished for stealing bread. Katniss orders them set free and healed. Venia is said to have always been the strongest: for example, in Catching Fire, Venia is the only one to contain her emotions while working on Katniss's appearance. Octavia and Flavius both needed to leave on account of being too emotional.

• Avox girl (Lavinia) — A servant girl whose tongue has been cut out for being a traitor. She has red hair, porcelain skin, and striking features. Because of her inability to speak, Katniss does not know her name or anything about her. Katniss recognizes her from when she and Gale witnessed the girl's capture and the death of her friend, and Katniss later speculates that she is a runaway from the Capitol. In Mockingjay, Katniss learns that her name was Lavinia and that it was planned that she be tortured to death. Katniss learns from Peeta that her torturers used too much electricity during the process and her heart stopped, accidentally granting her a quick and less painful death.

• Plutarch Heavensbee — In the 74th Hunger Games, he is the judge that falls into the punch bowl when Katniss shoots an arrow at the apple in the suckling pig's mouth. In Catching Fire, he is the new Head Gamemaker following the execution of Seneca Crane. He is later shown to be the leader of the rebellion movement in the Districts, and is the mastermind behind the plan to break the tributes out of the arena in Catching Fire. He tries to give Katniss hints about the nature of the Arena for the Quarter Quell, but Katniss doesn't pick up on it until much later. In Mockingjay he has become a "rebel filmmaker" and helps create propaganda featuring Katniss as the Mockingjay for Panem. Katniss notices that he takes no credit for small victories, commenting that he will make his final bow when the rebellion is over. He is elected Secretary of Communications after the war ends.

• Fulvia Cardew - Plutarch Heavensbee's assistant. She works for the Rebels alongside him in District 13. She is originally from The Capitol. She has silver flowers inlaid in her plump cheeks.

• Caesar Flickerman — A popular Capitol reporter who is famous for having conducted interviews for the Hunger Games for more than 40 years. Described as wearing a "ceremonial suit, midnight blue dotted with a thousand tiny electric bulbs" and having a heavily powdered face and hair that is a different color for each Hunger Games, he is somewhat freakish in appearance to Katniss's District eyes. He is easygoing with most, if not all people, and is excellent at making the tributes "shine." In Mockingjay, he is also the one who interviews Peeta during his pro-Capitol propos. Stanley Tucci plays Caesar Flickerman in the film.

• Seneca Crane — The Head Gamemaker during the 74th Hunger Games. He is executed because he lets both Katniss and Peeta live. The book gives no details; in the movie Crane, escorted by Peacekeepers, is locked in an opulent room containing only an elegant bowl of fresh Nightlock berries for him to consume. In the second book, Katniss effectively both impresses and shocks (causing some to faint) the Gamemakers by using the paint from Peeta's portrait of Rue, a practice dummy strung from the rafters of the gymnasium with a hangman's noose, and the name "Seneca Crane" as a warning and epitaph. He is played by Wes Bentley in the movie version of The Hunger Games.

• Portia — Peeta's stylist for the 74th and the 75th Hunger Games. Very little is known about her and her styling team. All four of them are executed on live television to punish Peeta during the war. Portia is played by Latarsha Rose in the movie version of The Hunger Games.

• Tigris — A former stylist who currently works in an underwear store in The Capitol. Her face has been "altered into a semi-feline mask" from many surgical operations. It is implied these alterations, evidently too strange for even people in The Capitol, caused her to be shunned and banned as a stylist for the Hunger Games; this resulted in Tigris becoming embittered towards The Capatol. She aids Katniss's squad on their final mission by hiding them in her shop and disguising them. When Katniss offers Tigris food, she says "I eat next to nothing,if not that, raw meat." After that, Katniss says that Tigris is too into her character.

• Claudius Templesmith- The famous game announcer in all of Panem. He is usually associated with Caesar.He is the one that made Katniss look for Peeta in the game, when he announced there can be two winners, but they have to be in the same district. He was protrayed in the film by Toby Jones.

In District 13

• President Alma Coin — The President of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion. Described as having eyes "the color of slush you wish would melt away", "gray hair that falls in an unbroken sheet to her shoulders" that is "uniform...without a flaw, a wisp, even a split end." She runs 13 similarly, with no flaws or imperfections. Though she and Katniss are on the same side, Katniss greatly dislikes her because of her ruthlessness and her hunger for power. Despite her affiliation with the rebellion, she is even more ruthless than Snow since she, unlike him, is willing to break her word. Her desire for power is such that she kills a crowd of Capitol children and her own medics — with Primrose Everdeen amongst them — to undermine President Snow. After the war is over and the Capitol now under Coin's reign, she calls a clandestine meeting of the seven remaining tributes, ordering them to vote whether or not to continue the Hunger Games, using the children of the Capitol as tributes, most likely with those related to the families that held the most power which would include President Snow's granddaughter. The matter is quickly approved with Haymitch being the deciding vote. However after Snow had revealed the truth to Katniss, with Snow having reminded Katniss that they had agreed not to lie to each other, Katniss realizes that Coin is just as evil as Snow. When Katniss is given the opportunity to execute President Snow, she instead kills Coin, partly to avenge Prim Everdeen's death. Later Katniss is told that Commander Paylor of District 8 has been elected the new President. Although she only appears in one novel, Coin may be considered as much the main antagonist of the series as President Snow, or at least she assumes the role of antagonist in Mockingjay.

• Boggs — First introduced as President Coin's right hand man. Katniss writes him off as someone she will dislike due to her feelings toward Coin. However, he is shown to be quite witty and friendly, and Katniss starts to like him. He serves as Katniss's bodyguard for part of Mockingjay, and is assigned to Squad 451 along with Katniss, Gale, and Finnick . He accidentally steps on a land mine on a Capitol street that the Holo did not detect. When his legs are blown off, the squad drags him into an apartment, where he gives Katniss his Holo and tells her to complete her "mission," to not trust "them" (who this is referring to is unclear), and to kill Peeta. He dies soon after.

• Leeg 1, Leeg 2, Mitchell, Jackson, and Homes — Part of Katniss's sharpshooting team, the Star Squad, they are all killed in the war. Leeg 1 and 2 are identical twins and so are given the same name. Leeg 2 dies from poisonous darts that shoot out of a wrongly labeled pod. Mitchell is accidentally kicked into a net of barbed wire by a raging Peeta and subsequently killed by a black tar-like substance. Jackson and Leeg 1 stay behind to hold back the muttations, presumably killing them. Homes is decapitated by the lizard muttations along with Finnick and Castor.

• Cressida — Resident director from the Capitol, she and her camera crew join the rebellion, moving to District 13 after fleeing the Capitol. She films the rebels' propos, following the training and the final mission of Katniss and her troop. After they're attacked, she leads the remaining members of the Star Squad to safety in Tigris' shop. Post-war it is shown she manages to survive and now films war damage throughout the districts.

• Castor and Pollux (brothers) — Cressida's camera crew from the Capitol. They often wear "insect shells", that is, a wearable carapace holding the camera and equipment. Pollux is an Avox and gets along well with Katniss after she sings "The Hanging Tree." Castor is killed by the lizard muttations with Finnick and Homes. Their names come from the appropriately-named constellation, Gemini, the twins of Greek mythology. In the myth, as in Mockingjay, Castor was killed, while Pollux lived on alone.

• Messalla — He is part of the camera crew that films propos for the war, and Cressida's assistant. He's originally from the Capitol, but has joined the rebels in war. He does minor things, like touching up Katniss' makeup occasionally. When the Star Squad goes underground, Messalla is melted by a pod.

• Dr. Aurelius — He is a doctor from District 13. He took care of Katniss during her time in District 13 and headed the study on Peeta's hijacking. In order to save Katniss's life after she kills Coin, he says she is mentally unstable. His name may be based off of the Greek god of medicine.

In Other Districts

• Commander Paylor — First appears in Mockingjay. Paylor is a leader of the rebel troops in District 8. Katniss meets her while in District 8 to film a propo. Later in Mockingjay, while wandering around President's Snow now rebel-inhabited mansion, Paylor allows Katniss to see President Snow, who is now imprisoned and awaiting execution. Two days after Katniss kills Coin, Paylor becomes President of Panem.

• Twill and Bonnie — Katniss meets Twill and Bonnie in the woods during Catching Fire. Both are from District 8 and are rebels. Twill proves this by holding out a piece of bread with the image of a mockingjay; it is the first time Katniss sees that the mockingjay has become a symbol of rebellion. Bonnie and Twill are on their way to District 13 and they are the first to tell Katniss that District 13 may exist. Katniss also begins to ponder the reality of District 13, when she realizes that they show the same footage of the burned-down justice building again and again, each time implying it is current footage. However, in Mockingjay, it is mentioned that the pair never made it to 13, and they are presumed dead.

• Annie Cresta — From District 4, she competed in and won the 70th Hunger Games. In it, she went insane after seeing the male tribute from her district decapitated. When an earthquake broke a dam, the arena was flooded. She won because, being from the fishing district, she was the best swimmer there. Annie seems never to have fully recovered. She has sea green eyes and dark hair. She is chosen at the reaping for the Quarter Quell, but Mags volunteers to take her place. Her scream is used by the jabberjays in the Quarter Quell to torment Finnick, who loves her. In Mockingjay, she and Finnick Odair marry, and she later gives birth to his son after his death. Annie votes against another Hunger Games for Capitol children.

• Titus — A District 6 tribute from a previous Games who went savage. Gamemakers had to stun him with electric guns to collect the bodies of the players he'd killed before he ate them. The Gamemakers engineered an avalanche to kill him so the winner wouldn't be a lunatic.
