12 Years a Slave is a 2013 historical drama film written by John Ridley and directed by Steve McQueen.[1][2] It an adaptation of the eponymous 1853 autobiography by Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free negro who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery.[3] Produced by actor Brad Pitt, who has a supporting role in the film, the film was financed primarily by his company Plan B Entertainment.[4] Following successful screenings at the Telluride Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival, the film went on win the People's Choice Award at the public premiere during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.[5][6][7][8]

Distribution for the film was handled by Fox Searchlight who opened the film with a limited released aimed primarily towards art house and African American patrons.[9] The film's release was gradually widened in subsequent weeks.[10] During its opening limited release in the US, the film debuted with a weekend total of $923,715 on 19 screens for a $48,617 per-screen average.[11] International release dates for 12 Years a Slave have were largely delayed to early 2014 in order to take advantage of the attention created by awards seasons.[12] Currently, the film has earned a domestic total of $37,075,000.[13][14]

Upon release, the film received universal acclaim by critics.[15][16] A wide variety of awards were given to the cast who received general acclaim from film critics.[17][18] Among the most rewarded actors include lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and supporting performers Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o - all three receiving nominations from both the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild.[19][20][21] The film was nominated for several ensemble awards for best cast, including the Screen Actor Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.[22]

Brad Pitt received several awards as a producer for the film, including an award from the American Film Institute.[23] Along with separate awards as a producer, Pitt was the recipient of several ensemble awards along with Ejiofor, Fassbender, Nyong'O, and actors who were only cited in ensemble awards such as Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti and Sarah Paulson.[24] One of the most recognized aspects of the film was the direction by McQueen, who received general acclaim for his detached style.[25][26][27] McQueen received a large degree of awards, including a nomination at the Golden Globes for Best Director.[28]

With 13 nominations, the film tied David O. Russell's American Hustle as the most nominated film at the 2013 Critics' Choice Movie Award.[27] With four nominations, it was the most recognized at the 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards.[20] In addition to its numerous awards and nominations, 12 Years a Slave has been named as one of the best films of 2013 by various ongoing critics.[29][30]
