January–March
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on January 7 at a depth of 0.0 km.[1]
- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on January 8 at a depth of 0.0 km.[2] This event came within 24 hours of the previous one and due to being a similar magnitude can be considered a doublet earthquake. Taiwan was struck by another 6.7 magnitude quake on December 24, 1912.
- A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck north of Minahasa Peninsula, Indonesia on January 11 at a depth of 0.0 km.[3]
- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on January 19 at a depth of 150.0 km.[4] Some damage was reported.[5]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on February 14 at a depth of 100.0 km.[6]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on February 20 at a depth of 0.0 km.[7]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southwest of Westport, New Zealand on February 22 at a depth of 33.0 km. A few homes were destroyed.[8]
- A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck El Oro Province, Ecuador on February 24 at a depth of 50.0 km. At least 101 people died and many homes were destroyed.[9]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on March 3 at a depth of 150.0 km.[10]
- A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Xizang Province, China on March 6 at a depth of 35.0 km. This was followed later that day by a slightly stronger magnitude 6.4 earthquake in the same area. This can be classed as a doublet earthquake [11]
- A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck south of Mindanao, Philippines on March 14 at a depth of 15.0 km.[12] One-hundred and thirty-eight people were killed, at least 51 were injured and many homes were destroyed. Some changes to the landscape were recorded.[13]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Volcano Islands, Japan on March 23 at a depth of 80.0 km.[14]
- A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Hormozgan Province, Iran on March 24 at an unknown depth. Eleven people were killed in the area.[15]
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Andreanof Islands, Alaska on March 31 at a depth of 60.0 km.[16]

- A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the south coast of Peru on August 6 at a depth of 25.0 km.[31] At least 51 deaths were reported as well as damage and destruction of many homes. Caraveli suffered most of the destruction.[32]
- A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck southern Sumatra, Indonesia on August 13 at a depth of 75.0 km.[33]
- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Sichuan Province, China during August. The exact date and depth of the event were unknown. Fifty-one people were killed and some homes were destroyed.[34]
- A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Debub Omo Zone, Ethiopia on September 16 at a depth of 35.0 km.[35]
