"Lovely" is a song by American singers Billie Eilish and Khalid for the official soundtrack of the second season of the Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why.[1] The song was released on April 19, 2018, through Darkroom and Interscope Records.[2] It was written by the lead artists and Eilish's brother Finneas O'Connell, who also produced the track.[3] The song reached the top five in Australia and New Zealand and was certified Platinum in several countries including the United States and Canada.[4][5] The song was included on the expanded edition of Eilish's 2017 EP Don't Smile at Me in various countries, and serves as the ninth single from the EP.
Background
The song was written in producer Finneas O'Connell's bedroom alongside a recording of the piano part of the song. Vocals and other instruments were added in the following months. Madison Leinster provided the violin part of the song.[6] In an interview with Zane Lowe, Eilish said on the title:[7]
We called it [lovely] because the song was sort of really freaking depressing so then it’s like oh, how lovely. Just taking everything horrible like you know what this is great. I’m so happy being miserable.
Composition and lyrics
The song is written in the key of E minor with a moderately fast tempo of 114 of 110 beats per minute and its chord progression follows a basic sequence of Cmaj7–Em–Bm.[8] Rolling Stone said that "The smoldering ballad builds with a potent mix of piano, strings and sparse percussion."[9] The song's lyrics allude to the duo attempting to overcome a serious depression.[7] In the chorus, It says "heart made of glass my mind of stone", meaning her heart is easily broken and she is stubborn.
Music video
A music video for the song was released a week following the single's release and was directed by Taylor Cohen. It shows the two singers trapped inside a glass box. It begins to rain inside the box and the water freezes. As the ice thaws, the box is revealed to be empty.[10] As of November 2019 the song has over 510 million views on YouTube.[11]
Reception
NME's Hannah Mylrea called the song one of the best from the official soundtrack for the second season of 13 Reasons Why, saying "With its lush strings and interweaving vocals, this sizzling duet is properly gorgeous. The masterfully written balled is completed with heart-wrenching crescendos and trickling piano lines, and is totally, ahem, lovely."[1] Mike Nied of Idolator gave the song a positive review and said "the collaborators deliver some of their most soulful vocals over heartrending strings and atmospheric production."[7] Earmilk was similarly positive, saying "Take two of the best voices in pop music and pair them with one of the greatest new producers in pop music, and you get magic."[12] The song was sampled by rapper Juice Wrld throughout his album Goodbye & Good Riddance, which peaked at number four on the Billboard 200.
