History
Before construction of newly road of Mehran hihghway it was known as Kumb–Nawabshah Road. It was pending for 7 years and caused heavy environmental pollution due to redtapism and incomplete construction.[1] This highway was constructed by the Government of Sindh. It was completed at the end of June 2015 and was funded by Asian Development Bank.[2][3]
Accidents
Mehran highway is the only road which connects Nawabshah to Khairpur districts. Moreover, it is the shortcut to reach Sukkur rather than the national highway. Unauthorized vehicles which travel from northern parts of Pakistan such as Panjab, KPK, Fata, AJK to southern part of Pakistan Karachi often use this provincial highway of Sindh. Therefore, deadly accidents have occurred on many occasions.[4][5][6][7] A passenger bus from Uch Sharif Bahawalpur overturned and slipped off the road on Mehran highway near Sui Gas bus stop within the jurisdiction of Thari Mirwah police station.[8] On 24 August 2014 a coach coming from Punjab to Karachi collided at Kot lalu with a van of Thari city which was traveling form Karachi to Thari Mirwah; 10 passengers including one woman were killed on the spot and 11 other injured all these passengers were native of Thari Mirwah[9]
