A military junta (/ˈhʊntə/ or /ˈdʒʌntə/) is a government led by a committee of military leaders. The term derives from the Spanish and Portuguese junta meaning committee, specifically a board of directors. It originally referred to an executive body that came to power after a military coup in 20th century Latin America. Sometimes it becomes a military dictatorship, though the terms are not synonymous.
