Miss Sloane is a 2016 political thriller film directed by John Madden from a script by Jonathan Perera. The film stars Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alison Pill, Jake Lacy, John Lithgow and Sam Waterston.

The film had its world premiere on November 11, 2016 at the AFI Fest and was released in the United States on November 25, 2016 by EuropaCorp on a limited release before opening wide on December 9, 2016, and is scheduled to be released in France on March 8, 2017.

Plot

Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is a lobbyist who advocates for universal background checks.[4]

Cast

Production

In September 2015, it was announced that Jessica Chastain had been cast in the film, with John Madden directing the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Perera. Ben Browning would produce under his FilmNation Entertainment banner and Patrick Chu would executive produce, while EuropaCorp would handle worldwide distribution, produce, and finance the film.[5] In January 2016, it was announced that Alison Pill had joined the cast of the film.[6] That same month, Jake Lacy and Gugu Mbatha-Raw joined the cast of the film.[7][8] In February 2016, Douglas Smith, Mark Strong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sam Waterston, John Lithgow, and Enis Esmer joined the cast.[9][10][11] In March 2016, Meghann Fahy joined the cast of the film.[12] Max Richter composed the film's score.[13]

Filming

Principal photography began on February 12, 2016, in Toronto.[14][15] In March 2016, Jessica Chastain was spotted on set filming.[16] Production wrapped in Toronto on March 30, 2016.[17] In April 2016, additional shooting took place in Washington, D.C..[18][19] Principal photography concluded on April 6, 2016.[20]

Release

In August 2016, two images of Chastain were released.[21][22] The film had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 11, 2016.[23] It also screened at the Napa Valley Film Festival on November 13, 2016.[24] The film was originally scheduled to be released on December 9, 2016.[25] It was later moved up to November 25.[26]

Box office

The film had its wide release alongside Office Christmas Party and The Bounce Back, as well as the wide expansion of Nocturnal Animals. The film was projected to gross $2–4 million in its opening weekend, but only ended up making $1.8 million, finishing 11th at the box office.[27]

Critical response

Miss Sloane received generally positive reviews from critics. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 69%, based on 113 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Miss Sloane sits squarely on the shoulder's of Jessica Chastain's performance – and she responds with awards-worthy work that single-handedly elevates the film."[28] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 63 out of 100, based on 37 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[29]
