Monotype-fonts were developped by the compagny Monotype . This name has been used by three firms:
Two firms had their roots in "hot metal" or lead type in the printing industry. They could not cope with the changing market when computer, offset and photographic systems took over control:

The latter firm is in a sense the successor to the English Monotype-factory. It has the rights to the designs, and later many designs more from other sources. The remains of the production-archive and what's left of the machines left, rests with the:
Type Museum in Londen in Engeland.There the original matrices can still be made and ordered parts of the old machines. The collection itself is the property of the British Science Museum . The survival of the Type Museum is threatened: the building is not owned more of the Science Museum, housing is in very poor state of repair, and the new owner would make of luxury apartments of it.
Hot metal A Monotype caster The first two above mentioned firms have produced a long list of fonts, which were identified by names and serial numbers. That type design eventually acquired a very good name. The brand "Monotype" was synonymous with high quality and reliability.
In their name was much typographic researched historical character designs from the early years of the typography. Many of those letters were very nice "revivals" produced, including the characters Garamond , Baskerville , Bodoni , Bembo , Caslon and many other.
The big difference between the two firms is that the American fonts do not match the English fonts. Letters with the same name in most cases there was another designer, they look different and are implemented differently. The indentification numbers are not at all in line.
The matrices of the two firms are different too, in terms of depth, the image inside the matrix, implementation and size. For example, the American matrices are 0, 025 mm (. 010 inch ) less deep, and consequently the Interior of American foundry moulds or "moulds" need to higher, to be able producing character with the type height of 23, 3 mm (. 918 inch). It was one of many measures, which the two Monotype companies names to the world market to divide among themselves.
So, for example, the British company The Monotype Corporation Ltd. in Salfords many customers in India, Africa, and many parts of Asia. For these countries are many "non-latin-typefaces" created, Hebrew, Javanese, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Thai etc. The Americans kept America and Canada for themselves.
The composition-caster machines of Monotype produced ready-to-use pages in composition. The text consisted of single type. The machine supplied filled lines varying the width of the space. These ending machines were controlled with a paper ribbon. Typing of the texts on the "keyboards" was manual work and took much more time than casting. A composition-caster in full company needed the ribbons of at least three keyboards . Correction of the final composition was possible by simply replacing the moveable type. The lines did not to be recast, as with the Linotype .

With specially customized machines and moulds they can cast up to 36 points in composition: "large-composition". The "large" or "large-composition-composition-matrices are correspondingly larger, and there is only room for 'one' alphabet of in the die-case. Because of this, it is impossible in one machine-run Roman and italic. And so there is always more hand work to do all composition.
A Monotype matrix case for large composition Type for hand-composing was also cast with Monotype machines, actually all character up to 36pt, and rules could be cast on a large-composition machine. There was still another machine: the "super-caster" or "supra". This machine could cast single type, but after conversion also be used to cast any material needed in print shops. Reglettes, ornaments, and all other materials, character up to 72 points could be cast. There were moulds with inserts for sizes 14 to 36 point. For the even larger sizes of 42, 48, 60 and 72 was another type cast in use. The machine had to be rebuilt for each different type of material
Unit-arrangement The width of the "hot-lead" Monotype type is expressed in "units" of the "set". The widest letter in the alphabet, usually the capital "W", was measured in quarter-Pica (typography) -points. a unit is a 1/18 part of this wodth.
The unit-width is calculated as follows, example 12set.
18 units 12 set = 12 pica punt breed
1 unit 1 set = 1/18 * 1/12 * 1/6 = 1/1296 inch. = .000771605 inch
1 unit 12 set = 12/1296 = .00925926 inch English and American manuals use a different size for the pica: the new-pica = .1660 inch. On the European mainland all wedges and tables in the manuals are based on the "old" pica =. .1667 inch and those wedges can be identified by the extra capital E (= english). That gives small differences in the tables in the various manuals. In practice, however, these differences are so small, that they make only little difference, when cast with a S5-E wedge or a S5 wedge based on the new-pica.
All character are designed to have a width a whole number of units of the set.
So for instance: A=14, B=13, C=14... a=8, b,d,h,k,n,p,q=10, c=8 ... The list with these widths is called "unit-arrangement" (U.A.). Different fonts can have same U.A.. In some fonts the unit-arrangement can be different for each point-size. That depends on all of the design. For example with the Lutetia (typeface) and some other fonts of Jan van Krimpen . These UA's are essential for the layout of the matrix-case, in which the matrices are sorted in the rows by the unit-witdhs. The various "unit-arrangements" have been given numbers.
Long en Short descenders The letters g j p q y ij are descenders . In the italic is also the f in addition to the long-'s '. Many of the older fonts were intended mainly for use in newspaper columns. Times New Roman is a good example, but there were many more.
The descenders were kept rather short in these fonts, as much as possible, to be able to print as much text possible on the pages. However, for many fonts for luxury expenditure were also longer variants of the descenders available – the lining might need to be adjusted, when casting on a larger body-size.
Letter press printing The design op fonts in letterpress need to be adjusted to this technique. The type is printed with some force on the paper, the ink on the type is forced to the edges of the letter. This is what is called a "bead edge". The center of the printed character is a bit lighter. This is further enhanced because not only the surface of the type get int, but also the bevels around it adopt some ink, and contribute also to the printed typeface in the print.
What with a small microscope can be easily found.[1]
The bead edge and brightening in the centre carry both to the impact of the calligraphic typeface in print. And... not least.. with letterpress there is a much wider choice possible in suitable (often more expensive) paper types, which can be printed.
Computer-adjustments After the "hot-metal"-firms had to stop because of the transition from letterpress to offset by more and more printing companies, with Lanston-Monotype in America first, the font designs were "adjusted" for computer use. But there is a difference with the old hot-metal characters. The fixed relationship between the width of the letters in the "unit-arrangement" is often experienced as a "disadvantage". A discussion already conducted in the "old times", for example, by a typographer as Jan van Krimpen .
The design of lead type cannot be copied without some adjustments since the pressure on lead type during printing will press the ink sideways, and the final appearance on paper is wider than the surface of lead character. But the extra width is not at alle places around the character the same. Bbecause that depends on many factors such as the paper surface used, the actual pressure, the press used, cylinder or platten press and more. This will give a good printed text in letterpress a stronger calligraphic appearance.
Many digital fonts from the early days of the digital age have this characteristics. The metal surface was simply copied, consequently the color of the printed pages is far too light.
In offset or other modern printing techniques, the typeface on the plate and the letter in print much more match. The differences between the letters themselves in the printed text are much less large. The use of mostly coated papers-types at offset carries extra in to.
During the design process this should be taken into account . Simple design-drawing, which was the basis for surface of a lead-letter, and that without any adjustment as offset or use computer-letter, that produces at best only little success.
The list The alphabetical list below refers primarily to the fonts produced by the English "hot metal" Monotype company. The below mentioned numbers are submitted by the English "specimen-blades", four editions of the booklets "Monotype book of information", and some additional information of the "Type-museum" in London.
In the sixties of the 20th century many Monotype fonts were cancelled. Its "patterns" the originals from which the punches are created, the punches and the whole stock remaining matrices, were destroyed. The font actually disappeared from the face of the Earth. Except ... the matrices in possession of various printers. The sample sheets of these fonts are particularly difficult to find, and are missing in many collections.
A small number of American letter designs are added to the list, and with "Am" and their number. American matrices differ from those in England were produced. American matrices were 0, 0025 mm (. 0010 inch) less deeply engraved. Consequently, were the American moulds internal 0, 0025 mm (. 0010 inch) higher compared with moulds from the factory in Salfords UK. American matrices on an English cast to give a consequence low letter. English matrices on American moulds will produce French height type.

The italic which was designed at this series, was found by the customers much too extreme. Eventually it was decided to design a more modest italic. That was: ' Series 174 '. The extra luxury italic "swash"-capitals continued to be maintained. In old diecases the italic matrices with 156 on it occasionally are to be found, and these quite popular for present users of Monotype machines.

Jan van Krimpen started in 1931 with the design of this typeface. Eventually leading to a whole font family. With the permission of the firm Enschede & Sons in Haarlem, "Series 458" was cut in 1936. It was a contemporary font, which combines characteristics of many old fonts. The colour is matched to antique characters, but the serifs are almost horizontal and verticals. The font runs quite wide and the color is fairly light. The italic is an experiment: by the oblique roman of the same width as the roman.

Stempel AG (foundry) in formerly Frankfurt (now Darmstadt), Linotype matrices were available at Linotype GmbH (Berlin and Frankfurt), and Monotype-matrices could be ordered from Monotype Setzmachinen-Fabrik GMbH (Frankfurt, Berlin). What still can at the Type museum in London, because there the "patterns" and punches and production archives survived. The shape of the letter was identical for all three systems. Hand-composing type could be mixed with Linotype and Monotype composition rules. The letter had a limited success. There was also criticism: the letter was suffering from the combined disadvantages of the three systems. For example: the roman and italic are as wide as those on a Linotype matrix are combined. This font was designed by Jan van Krimpen originally intended to print a Bible, at the Spectrum publishing house in Utrecht (Netherlands). The project was cancelled. Nevertheless, the font was rather successful. Therefore, in collaboration with Enschede & Sons it was decided to cut the complete series. The font is open and seems fairly robust. The character produces a fairly compact composition.

Typewriter is a particular font. All characters are of the same width, they are cast with a "flat" wedge. Consequently, all type-writer font are cast with the same diecase layout, key-banks and wedge. There was more than enough space to all the underlined characters in the diecase too.
Printers used these fonts to print mailings for large companies. The print was made to look like a hand-typed personal letter. The press was covered with a previously used, old worn paper, combined with a thin cloth silk-tissue. In this way, the type do not get equal pressure and ink on the paper.
